Ok...I'm having a BIG problem. My laptop would not boot in safe mode using F8 at start up. I would just restart over and over. stupid me read somewhere that you can start XP in safe mode form the "run" window using msconfig.

So I did that and restarted and, as I"m sure you can guess, the machine is now stuck in a start up loop.

No matter what option I choose on the F8 Menu, it just restarts and the loop doesn't end.

I don't have any physical OS disks..the recovery works off of a partition. I can get the partition with F11 but it won't boot to do a windows restore and i really don't want to do a full recovery...

can some one PLEASE HELP ME!?!?!?!?!?!?!

don't think so...I'm pretty sure I did it to myself....i was booting fine in regular mode until I told it through xp to boot in safe mode...now I can't get it out of the loop of it trying to boot in safe mode an failing.
can you get to a command prompt with some how with out a physical boot disk before windows attempts to start?
 
What is the last driver you see loading when you try safe mode? Have you tried the last known good config option? Do you see an option to disable automatic restart on error?
 
yes..I've tried all the options on the F8 screen...
everytime, it gets toe the windows logo screen and in about 2 seconds you hear it stop loading and reboot....and you end up back at the F8 menu...
 
the last driver I see is mup.sys if that means anything.
 
Which OS are you running (XP/Vista/7)? Have you tried "last known good configuration" option?

Chkdsk is a utility that checks the computer's hard disk drives' status for any cross-linked or any additional errors with the hard disk drive.

MS-DOS versions 2.x - 4.x used chkdsk.com,
MS-DOS versions 5.x and beyond used chkdsk.exe

OK what happened is boot.ini is now saved with the /safeboot switch since you modified msconfig. The only way to recover is to boot to your xp cd, choose recovery console and run the "bootcfg /rebuild" command. It's quite easy if you have the cd. That should reqrite boot.ini without the /safeboot switch. Google it and find a good tutorial. Sorry but no other way besides plugging that drive into another system as a slave and editing boot.ini.
 
How do I get to the recovery console?
 
It's not the memory/hardware people, simple boot.ini fix. Any XP or 2000 cd will get you into recovery console. Boot to the cd (hit any key when it says "press any key to boot to cd") From the setup menu choose repair, then recovery console.
 
I don't have a CD, the Xp is on a partition as a recovery disk
 
Another option if you have a add on video card is to uplug it and use your onboard video. The reason being is safe mode can freak out and reboot when 3rd party add on video cards are installed and it does not have any driver to use with it.
 
no add on video card...all the hardware on this computer is from the "Factory"
 
I know that F11 gets you in recovery mode, but I don't see a way to get to a command prompt
 
Well, after some search I believe you have a corrupted registry, so first you must recover normal boot and then proceed to fix this issue. Since you don't have the OS CD you'll want to take a look at the following link:

Any old xp/2000 cd, or even a portable floppy drive can get your system back up to at least the prompt sign, so borrow one from a friend.
 
Dude it's not registry corruption, they edited boot.ini via msconfig and it is stuck in a safe mode loop. NOT UNCOMMON.

"Just for the records, what I ended up doing was installing a dual boot version of XP, then when I could access the boot.ini files through msconfig, I removed the /safeboot from the boot.ini for my XP boot that was looping. I did that the long way - looks like I could have just loaded the recovery console and modified the boot.ini to remove /safeboot from there. oh well, it works now."
