Simply, use websites like dribbble, behance, deviantart and some website showcases to see what's "IN" today.

You must learn Photoshop tool and tricks and use google as a teacher and you will become a updated designer with latest skills. This is the only suggestion I can give.

you can start with photoshop and there are many online sites to address you very well. If you need tuts then go to YT and w3schools and read book for it but most important you must practices it..

So why exactly do you want to be a graphics designer? You would make more and save time by outsourcing all of those things you want to do (assuming you're a good marketer).

I was the same boat with you one year ago.

At first, I learn how to use all basic tools in Photoshop, if you know all basic tools, it's easy to go with illustrator.

Then that's time to go some website like logoponds, behance, awwwards to see what people are doing that time to learn the trend.

That's what I have learned in one year.

You should learn Photoshop and you have to study about each and every item you want to design. Like if you want to design Banner, you should know what exactly the banner is.

I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago. I started with gimp and found images that I thought were neat and then read tutorials on how to recreate them. Over the past couple of years I have read many tutorials and have found that every time I do a tutorial I learn how to do something more efficient or I learn a next new tactic to add to my bag of tricks. Seems like it is easier to learn something if you have a purpose other than just reading it to learn it and then waiting for a project to apply it to. Good luck.

well, first of all you need to start form the basics. there are many tutorials on youtube and google but if contented you better find a tutor for more technicalities. A person also need conceptualization and creativity to create nice and good output.

You could read several graphic design tutorials or watch them in youtube. Even if you have the best and latest graphic designing software but doesn't know how to use it, the result will not be too good.

Reading tutorials can definitely help. You need to start with the basics as mentioned by our co-member but I think in order to be a good graphic designer, you need to have the skills already. I mean, you need to have drawing and art skills to be really good at it. I know someone who uses very simple tools and even do some of the details manually (just using some kind of pen attached to his Mac) and can make really good designs. He's selling t-shirts with his own design and he is doing really good.

Learn Adobe Photoshop and once you get the hang of it start using Illustrator and Indesign. Learn to imagine and be creative. Practice on paper, draw stuff and try to recreate them in photoshop. You can use various ebooks, podcasts and tutorial articles. and remember PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

User photoshop and practice as much as you can because practice makes the men perfect. If you will work on it and one day you will be expert and proficient in it. Many online tutorials are available where you can easily learn about it.

If you wanna take start, do graphics manually, it will gives you boost in future work. then start practicing on Adobe Illustrator, as its a key main basic and professional software or you can say 2 in 1 software.
