There are tons of photoshop tips and tricks and photoshop forums online. Also, Youtube has a ton of video tutorials. If you can't afford Photoshop, you can always get a free app called GIMP. It is almost like photoshop.

Now . . . The next thing to do is just dive in and start playing with it. If you love doing it, you will learn.

Photoshop and Gimp do what is called "Raster Graphics". To complete your education as a Graphic Artist, it is also important to learn how to do "Vector Graphics" Adobe Illustrator and Xara Designer are Vector applications.

Cheers! . . . and good luck on your journey to becoming a graphic designer :)

Definitely go with photoshop or illustrator for graphic design. It's a steep learning curve but it's well worth the time and effort. Endless possiblities. lyndaDOTcom is a good place to learn a bunch of things. You can just googlt 7 day free trial for lyndaDOTcom. Hope I helped!

I work with photoshop, Final Cut, Avid and After Effects for a living. As in any art, learn the cliches first. If you were a musician, you'd learn all the standard licks and playing methods first. Fortunately with computer graphics, you don't even have to know how to hold a pencil and make something recognizable.

Plow through all the basic how to use Photoshop courses first. The ones that give you examples and shows you how to do them. Once you've gotten your basic chops down, start copying what you like and figure out how they did it. Vola - you're now a hack with no talent, but you'll still get hired. ;-)

as a guy with a degree in Graphic Design the advice id give is

1 get hold of adobe creative suite
2 learn photoshop and illustrator by watching podcasts, reading tutorials etc
3 learn fireworks and dreamweaver and see how u can use them with the previous two tools.
    4. open your eyes. make a conscious effort to look at all signage, avertisements, typography, magazines, flyers, leaflets, newspapers etc etc. Think about why 'they work', why theyve used that colour combination, what font is that etc etc - this WILL become part of everyday life if you do it often and youll notice your designs just start to work once youve dissected other peoples
    5. start collecting things that you like and start a 'memory box' where u dump everything for later ideas
    6. take a course at an art school/ begin setting yourself projects and ask someone you trust and knows what they are on about for honest feedback.

hope all this helps buddy. and good luck on become a designer. its a great career and a wonderful experience along the way.

First off you need some design inspiration. Check out designsnack, Google it -- that's a pretty nice place. Then, once you have some ideas you gotta just look up photoshop tutorials I guess, that's what I did.

Use Photoshop, try to focus on web features ( i mean what you need to use for web graphics = shapes, gradient, aligns, ruler)
Use Flash Swift for flash ( much straigthforward then adobe's flash)
You can do gif banners already with photoshop

If you slicing your design, its a better idea to duplicate graphics on a new document, then use crop ... slices are not pixel perfect at some times ... and don't use " 900,1 px "

Search the Google and see the designs and absorb what makes a design unique from others. Then go and learn Photoshop and try it yourself.
Lastly i can say practice makes a man perfect.

I second that. lyndaDOTcom has loads of tutorials, loads of photoshop ones but also things like designing a wordpress site from scratch (designing it in photoshop, coding it into html + css then turning that into a wordpress theme). There are so many useful tips i've learnt and the range of topics they cover is pretty good.

But yeh also just by looking at tutorials online, experiment, go discover what works and what doesn't then try it yourself! They only way you will become great is if you practice, try it yourself rather than just reading up a lot or just following tutorials step by step.

Learning the programs is, of course, very important. But don't get so caught up in them that you overlook what you're really trying to learn. IE: graphic design. Look for art & design forums. Study some basic color theory, design & layout & look at other peoples' work. Pay attention to offline sources too like magazine layouts, flyers, advertising, etc.
