I was in the same boat until I started breaking everything down. Buying guest posts/ link placements is probably your best bet here, it will more than likely come at a cost though.
Check the sites which your competitors are getting links from and then look at the sites giving them links. This way your building a whole network of sites in the niche which provide links.

I do appreciate that, but I am really trying to learn and have the ability myself. I understand the process and way to get backlinks, but with the resources available I am not able to jump us up at a high level..

I appreciate that. We recently started messing with media outlets and we have a relationship with a decent amount of influencers. We too have social media stuff but it could definitely be improved.
As for content, I wouldn't say the content is bad. I would say that I could use more content that helps push our stuff (stuff I can internally link from to categories) rather than luring people in for information alone.

I actually earlier this week gathered backlink domains from a couple of competitors and then our own backlink profile. Filtered out any that we don't currently have and then filtered out anything with a low domain authority.
I can tell our competitors are part of a PBN (tons of mediocre themed websites with random links to them) which I would assume does give them a leg up in some capacity. But I have been passing off ones that look promising to one of the marketing girls who does an awesome job getting the handshake. I just need to keep consistently providing her more places to reach out to.
