FreeBSD seems more solid than Linux and it also uses XORG for gui/cli.

I am brushing up my C programmiing skills coz every program has to be installed from source in it... My ISP also uses FreeBSD...

How many Unix fans here? [both bsd/linux are influenced by *Nix]

Linux system admin here. Got 2 BSD boxes as well, but Linux on others (About 29 others :))
 
I like Linux, but not an expert! BTW who is your ISP?
 
I use Linux on 2 desktop computers and one server for almost 5 years now. But I've never tried any BSD system, linux is good for me :)
 
Linux/Unix is da shit. Hence my user name.
 
i run a few distros, both unix and linux. On my private machine i use freebsd, on some of my servers i use openbsd and on a few of them o run centos
 
I cant beleive i am seeing this...If you guys dont like linux...i wonder what you like windows??

I have been using ubuntu for a while and prefer centos/RHEL for server based work...Never been happier...cant even think about chnging to anything else.

Debian for servers, Windows for desktop. I think Linux is crap when it comes to desktop. Don't try to argue with me. Maybe you like it on desktop, but I don't. I hate it on desktop.

I believe by saying "Linux/Unix is da shit" he meant that it's cool. Everyone who has posted here by now, likes Linux. I can't see any negative response here.

Big fan of FreeBSD.

PFSense is a based on FreeBSD and I like it alot.
You should read the history of BSD :)

Did you know that Mac OS X is also a BSD deriative ? (build from the same BSD codebase as FreeBSD etc). So all Mac users are also BSD users :d
 
Wow! This is great, I didn't think there would be many takers for Nix as most IM tools are for windows...

Lets start building some opensource nix IM tools? lol

Sure it is/was a BSD derivative, but I don't think its anywhere even 50%... no even 30% similar to BSD.

I am talking in terms of OS kernel... but since MAc is not OpenSource, nobody has any particular idea where to draw the line between mac and bsd...

IMO, I wouldn't put it with bsd.

CentOS is very reliable imo. I used to host a ftp server in my basement and it was running on CentOS. It ran for almost 1 year 7 months... without stopping even once :)
 
I don't know, you can open shell on mac etc and use it like BSD. I haven't worked much on a mac though so i don't really know. But it surprised me to see a lot of hackers use macs at a hackermeeting. they all used their shell though :p (i mean hacker in the programmer sense, not the cracker one)
apache etc also work native on it, as a lot of other *nix programs like mysql, php, etc

I hate all distributions using RPM :p just for RPM hell :d

I used slackware for a while after my redhat9 server got hacked (dedi server) due to RPMs installed on the system where i didn't even know that they existed (yum etc did not exist yet so autoupdate was not available).
Needed to compile everything myself, like u are doing in BSD now

After that came Gentoo since it compiles with emerge, and now i'm hooked to debian because it is so small.

Eg: I needed Centos for an embedded application that would ONLY be able to connect to its server if it ran Centos (stupid server people) and the 'empty' base image for centos was 2gb big. The same 'empty' base image for debian was only 80mb big.... Since the device only had 1GB of flash memory I had to throw out a lot of RPMs that centos installed but that I would never need for my purposes to get under the 1GB limit. I ended up with a 800mb big working system, but it still proves to me what was true all those years back with redhat9. It installs a lot of junk that you do not need. I love that u can get a basic install with debian without junk and just apt-get all the stuff u need without all the crap you'll never use like RPM based releases.
