my desktop is also a inux (gentoo) machine and it simply rocks. Sometimes I need to use Windows in a VM but that's fine. For servers I prefer openbsd...
I Quit using Linux today...

My feelings are somewhat similar...I hate all distributions using RPMjust for RPM hell :d
I used slackware for a while after my redhat9 server got hacked (dedi server) due to RPMs installed on the system where i didn't even know that they existed (yum etc did not exist yet so autoupdate was not available).
Needed to compile everything myself, like u are doing in BSD now
After that came Gentoo since it compiles with emerge, and now i'm hooked to debian because it is so small.
Eg: I needed Centos for an embedded application that would ONLY be able to connect to its server if it ran Centos (stupid server people) and the 'empty' base image for centos was 2gb big. The same 'empty' base image for debian was only 80mb big.... Since the device only had 1GB of flash memory I had to throw out a lot of RPMs that centos installed but that I would never need for my purposes to get under the 1GB limit. I ended up with a 800mb big working system, but it still proves to me what was true all those years back with redhat9. It installs a lot of junk that you do not need. I love that u can get a basic install with debian without junk and just apt-get all the stuff u need without all the crap you'll never use like RPM based releases.
Thats why I quit using fedora... oh btw I am also a huge fan of Debian...
Debian is realy great. It has inspired Ubuntu, Arch. And backtrack is based on Ubuntu so ultimately based on Debian. My only problem so far with debian is wireless drivers for broadcom.Other than that, I never had any problem.

Linux user here too LOVE IT!! I cant stand ms win but we have it on 2 systems I am teaching my children to use both .

Linux user here. Almost a year ago I came across a similar thread when I just started fooling around Ubuntu. I was persuaded to quit using Windows (7) as my main OS for Ubuntu. Almost a year later, and I'm still loving the experience. I haven't regretted it one bit. Ubuntu is awesome! I virtualized Windows to do the things I need it for.

Either the cd did nnot have Xord [the gui window system] or you did not install it.
Maybe you did install it, but did not run it... "startx" should be the command to fire up gui.

This is a commonly accepted mistake by all...
Linux is not an OS but only a kernel written by Linus Torvaldeus ..
Kernel is the one which acts between OS and HW..
there are a very few true UNix systems and those are Mac OS, IBM aix and HP one i guess .. I few more there are for sure..

I'm sticking my guns to CentOS as I run my own private network services for my clients, plus many servers running on it. Make sure you get EPEL installed on CentOS, which make things much easier to manage.
I like FreeBSD too - only for specialized applications. And, yes, I write C for many Linux applications.
It's good to see the real Linux users here.

BSD is surely one of them...
Mac OS? okay, i know it was derived from BSD. but true unix system? Not at all, [maybe the first 1-2 releases]. Even if it uses similar commands like the "shred" or something.. that doesn't make it any closer to Unix.
Plus, as Mac is not opensource it cannot be said if it resembles unix, and to what degree.

Another mistake, the kernel and OS are not separate entities. kernel refers to the core of operating system.
sure you can use the kernel alone as operating system, but it won't be very user friendly.

Did a little research and a year ago the Ubuntu club was pretty small with a million or so users. Today that number is up to 12 million and for good reason. It's Linux for everybody. Now I want to get a better machine so I can VirtualBox with Windows on it.
