I need to generate an invoice

So I built a site for a friend and want to generate an invoice for him itemizing everything that went into it from keyword research and domain registration to content creation etc etc etc.

I have never had to do something like this before. Any ideas?

I use excel for that.. there are a lot of free templates online.

google for online invoice. I found one a couple of months ago but can't find it again. Made up a pretty good invoice. Should have bookmarked it. doh!

well, I did bookmark it on the computer on which I used it.

Just use Word. They have a few invoice templates included - so you can make something look quite professional in about 2 minutes

i use excel as well... generated an invoice just the other day infact, just grab a free template and fill in the blanks. if you dont have excel then google docs would be the way to go

I agree, Freshbooks is awesome, been using them for years.
They are the best around for this sort of thing until you get big enough to have a full fledged accounting system, but even then Freshbooks is still better most of the time. It doesn't do accounting well though, like you can't track PO's and so on.

I like using word templates as they're pretty high grade and professional (decent sized online library too)..

In terms of legal tips..
Basically cover your grounds on a legally valid contract (party names, briefly identify services/products rendered, amounts, if future delivery specify, etc)

In terms of client experience..
Whatever is simple to read and aesthetically pleasing.. plus header (your company or contact info) & footer (maybe with an attempt to lead for future services / offer future discount ?)

Paypal business invoice is a pretty good tool to use
