I just did some research on the company that dominates the SERPS on all of my keywords. I used Scrapebox and scraped his sites domain.

The results show about 500 different domains with his company name in it with different locations. So another words he has about 500 domains like "companynamewashingtondc.com", "companynamewesttampa.com", "companynameorangecountync.com"

All of those websites all have the same exactly things written on the page except for the locations changed.

My questions:

1) Is this guy literally paying for web hosting on every single one of these domains? Do you think it is all done on one centralized server to save him money?

2) Isn't this considered duplicate content according to Google? All of these websites have a PR of at least 2. Many of them have 3. His main site has 6. If they all say the same thing except for the locations changed, why is it such a high PR?

Well, this is interesting results. I never tried dealing with different locations. However, If you have your own server you can create unlimited domains with unlimited IP's. So, I have no problem with number 1 at all

However number 2 , where he uses exactly the same content is the interesting part. Hope someone more experienced with this situation will explain more.

Great Share.. +4 Rep :)

Well one thing that you can do is load it up into a backlinks checker such as MajesticSEO or Ahrefs and find out how many referring IPs there are pointing to his site.

If the number is below 500 you know he is also hosting them on separate IPs. Although depending on how authoritative the domain, it he could have a lot of other backlinks so may not give a definitive answer. A quick way to do a check though.

Seems a bit overkill having that many domains, but I highlight doubt those are high pr domains so will barely be providing any SEO power each anyway.

Get some good quality links and dominate them!

He has 2 different website templates. About half the sites follow one and half the sites follow the other. So about 250 on each with the location names changed.

Check the source code to see if Google sees the same content as you do.

And for the rest of the discussion...please follow OP's good example of not posting real domain names.

Given that he is promoting the same company each time, maybe Google sees this for what it is, unique content for a specific company, only used in multiple places.

This may be seen as being much different in Big Gs eyes as 500 different websites all not related in anyway displaying the same article....

I personally have never been scared of duplicate content and have been able to use duplicate content in well over 20 of my sites and I get good consistent traffic to them from G... Duplicate content is not the death knell of website, it is all dependent on how it is used and the other signals that Google gets from the site, both on page and off page...

Most people don't do it correctly and make everything look like spam on and off their site, and then when they fail all they can say it is it must be the duplicate content that is what is to blame, rather than all the other parts.

Just my thoughts, but I've been using them for 6 years now successfully... So, they can't be all wrong.

Duplicate content is not punished unless it is on more than one page in the same site.

No one seems to know this for some reason.

If I were to do this I owuld simply get a reseller hosting account or three.

Be interesting to know what the whois and ip address information for these domains is.

Makes more sense if they are on unshared static IP's and different registration.

To answer OP's questions:

1. You can go to somewhere like Hostgator and purchase one of their "Reseller Servers", then divvy the disk space / bandwidth as you see fit. If these sites don't have use disk space / bandwidth requirements, you can host them all on a plan for probably $25/mo total. Back in the day when I used to own a couple hundred micro-niche Adsense sites I was able to host them all on a single server for roughly $50/mo

2. Good links will give it high PR. Whether the content is duplicate or not has nothing to do with PR.

Well you can check the IP and find out for sure if he owns all of those sites.
But I would imagine that he does since some of my competitors do this as well (just not with that many sites).

As far as duplicate content, it BARELY matters for local sites.

With local sites you can get away with virtually anything. I know this because I have many local sites
ranking in the top 3.

I would honestly stop analyzing his backlinks. I have competitors with 6,000+ backlinks, many coming from
their own network, and I'm outranking them with less than 300 backlinks. All you need is better quality contextual
links. I just drip feed high pr links, and a few other things and it always takes out my competition.

Aha.. This is pretty new info for me !

So, you can use duplicate content for Link-Building and they will be indexed and pass link juice !

Then, Why all the hassle of unique content and Article Spinning !!!! :S :S :S

As for the hosting .

Yes plz answer this?

DISCLAIMER - this is just from my personal experience with 1 website.

I work on a ecomm website that has about 1000 products. For these 1000 products, we have 2 duplicate content issues:

1) About 4-5 different product descriptions shared over 1000 products (only thing that changes is the SKU, so around 200 x 5 descriptions)

2) Problems with parameters like p, dir, etc.. which will present the exact same content albeit in a diff order.

Well, I managed to get this website on page 1, even up to #3 before penguin 2.0 in May, then dropped to around 11, and now crawling back up to -#6-7 (keyword is medium-hard).

So I have never experienced any penalties or problems with these dup content issues (touching wood). If anyone has, please share.
