I've been working online full-time for over 12 years, and for the past year or so I've been feeling a lot of pain and soreness in my hands. A few months ago I got a serious strain in my mouse index finger.. like seriously fucking painful. The pain went away but it's still numb, like nerve damage numb.

Anyways.. after talking to some friends and poking around the web I realized that I probably have early signs of RSI (repetitive stress injury) which could eventually lead to carpel tunnel. Not good considering I earn a living online.

So I went out and forked for what's supposed to be the best keyboard to reduce hand and finger strain. Let's hope it works!

I can't post a link or pic, but it's called the Kinesis Advantage.

Any of you guys have similar problems after years of working on your computer?

I only use ergonomic style keyboards. I've been using them for years. Same thing happened to me, I had some pain in my wrists and had to change it. You'll be surprised what a huge difference it's going to make.

One simple solution: Buy a good voice dictating software that can eliminate finger movements all together, for the most part. ;) I remember a while ago a paid a meager sum for some software to minimize the physical tasks I did at the computer and it worked, to a degree. Maybe by now with this Siri stuff out there, the voice-recognition software has improved.

No not yet, have only worked online for 1 year. You should try some exercise on the gym focusing only on hands.

Noway i could get used to that.

So far i was always using Logitech keyboards, from their gaming series G, but i haven't changed my keyboard since 2009 and my mouse since 2008. I think i should change them soon, because they all get dirty and looks shitty, and also every now and then i feel pain in fingers or carpal tunnel. Still not sure what i am going buy, maybe some good office keyboard and mouse since i am not playing online games anymore :D, or maybe i will stay with Logitech but buy some newer keyboard.

Looking forward to it.

And rgeczi, I'm trying voice rec as well, just as a preventitive measure.

I feel your pain bro, I have some repetitive movement pain from all that clicking. I use lots of keyboard functions now and hand stretches in the morning help out tons.

dafuq..that thing looks like it runs on an engine...:p

Let us know how it is getting used to. If it helps that much then it looks like a good investment I can make before that starts happening.

Occurs to me this might be an economic opportunity for someone; the fact that people can suffer serious health effects from keyboarding.

Stress related injuries are medical conditions, and the solutions for them should be marketed as medical devices. Insurance companies would rather pay hundreds for medically-required input devices than thousands of dollars for hand surgeries. We have a hospital here in my hometown that specializes in hand surgery, and does nothing else.

You might even get the government to pay for it, like they do the motorized 3-wheeled carts you see everywhere.

Another thing that occurs to me is that computer manufacturers all seem to approach their products with a universal, "one size fits all" mentality, which is completely wrong. Peoples hand sizes vary dramatically, yet what manufacturer makes a line of good quality keyboards in small, medium & large?

Beyond hand-size, peoples hands are different in other ways. Maybe there is a way to make custom-shaped keyboards based on the individual's hands. Brick & mortar businesses with special, high tech hand measuring devices that make topographic maps of a person's hands, and then the data is sent off to a manufacturer that creates a perfectly ergonomically designed keyboard just for that individual.

$500? $750?

So far so good on my end, but who know what the coming years will bring ;) Let us know how it works out huh? That's a hefty price for a keyboard though.
