You would need more GPUs than there exists atoms in the universe to crack it with current GPUs.

Even quantum computers can't just magically crack it. And as I've said before, why does some cracker kid at home have a quantum computer and the miners don't?

A super quantum computer won't just magically appear and be able to crack crypto.

As technology advances, everyone, including the bad actors all get access to similar levels of tech.

In fact, the miners are going to get access way before any hackers at home will.

They have FAR MORE MONEY and are financially incentivized.

Not only that, but this is a known issue. Blockchain developers are well aware of this. There are trillions of dollars locked up in crypto.

We are not just going to sit around doing nothing while quantum computers advance over the years then go "whoops, there goes crypto".

a bit off topic here but in regards to cracking wallets since you mentioned a 256 bit seed, is that even more secure than a standard 128 bit seed (12 words)? Apparently hackers would go directly after the private keys and not the seed phrase so the 256 bit entropy providing extra protection might be an illusion. This is the answer I keep finding online when researching this:

A 12 word seed phrase provides 128 bits of entropy. A 24 word seed phrase provides 256 bits of entropy. This much is true. However, all bitcoin private keys provide, at most, 128 bits of security. So the security of the private keys generated by a 24 word seed phrase are identical to the security of the private keys generated by a 12 word seed phrase (provided, of course, that the seed phrases were not generated insecurely).

What people are talking about here is that a 256 bit seed list wallet "effectively" is like a 128 bit because people can skip trying to crack the seed list wallet, and go directly after a bitcoin private wallet, or an etherium private wallet.

It's important to remember(jesus I sound like chatgpt, but this is how I talk lol)..

The seed list "wallet" is not really a wallet. We call it that out of convenience. It's more like one of those man-bags that can contain all your wallets, if you're a weirdo with multiple wallets.. :-)

Here's how it works

It uses something called "hierarchical deterministic wallets". Cryptographic functions are applied to the seed list and this allows us to produce "virtually" unlimited numbers of private keys, ie, wallets.


Although they both appear to be private keys within cryptography, and they are in my understanding both just cryptographic private keys. Where the semantic difference lies is a 'wallet' is something related to the blockchain.

So we get this:

Wallet implies private key

but

private key does not imply wallet.

Now, the 24 word seed list is still 256 bits. It's not equivalent to a 12 word seed list.

Strictly speaking.

But, if that seed list, cryptographically maps to wallets that are encrypted with elliptic curve cryptography. Which is not all of them, but includes bitcoin and ethereum..

Then you can attack those wallets directly using an efficient method of brute forcing elliptic key cryptography which reduces the security of a 256 bit ECC to one equivalent to a 128 bit key.

In security, your system is only as strong as its weakest part, but of course, your seed list can map to dozens of wallets. If you most of your funds in a non-ECC 256 bit wallet, then those are protected to 256 bits standard.

However.. :-)

It's still 3.4 * 10^38

It's still not crackable with anything we have today. All the math above is on the same scale as far as we are concerned.

An analogy would be.

128 bits is like the size of our sun.

We can crack grains of rice with our current hardware.

128 bits is the sun.

I've been doing more research on this and supposedly the most efficient way for attackers to gain access to wallets is by going directly after your private keys and not guessing seed phrases just like you said (which is still highly inefficient).

As far as this:

which non-ECC 256 bit wallets can we use for bitcoin? I've tried doing a google search but haven't found anything with that search query

No attacker is going to crack a wallet though. Don't worry about it :-)

No one has cracked any crypto wallets.

This guy calculated that with the entire bitcoin mining system in 2017 it would take 2.1e12 years to brute force a 128 bit key.

That's if you had the ENTIRE BITCOIN NETWORK brute forcing a single 128 bit key.
