Backlinking is a great way to get your site ranked....if you update your site with unique quality work randomly like a 16 year old girl would then Google is going to love that and take it into consideration. You also want different kinds of anchor texts, some naked some not so naked. Using something like "Click Here" to learn more is usually a good anchor text in getting your foot through the door as well as using anchor text that relate to your keywords.
