Traffic might be high.. but quality went down hill long ago so we had to stop using the banners. The empty banner spaces around the forum are testament to that really. There are a number of reasons for this, many of which I and others have pointed out to the ad team here in the past, but they were never properly addressed from what I can see, it was usually a "but engagement is up etc etc" or "perhaps it's your creatives" which might well be the case.. but that engagement being up is from broke people looking to make $5 a day, it's not from buyers with money anymore.

On top of that if you look at the banners on the left hand side of the forum, when you scroll down in a sub-forum to the bottom of the thread list - those banners are below the thread list due to all the other options on the left side, so they're running alongside what is basically a huge black space that no one is EVER scrolling down to look at - that's wasted money on an advertisers part IMO.

Then you've got most people now running ad-blockers (not bhw's fault this one). The site-wide sticky you see across all sub-forums used to be a great placement when it was run for only one or two people, done manually back then. When they introduced the rotating text allowing numerous people to use it when the forum upgrade happened ad-blockers were then able to tell it's also an ad and not just a forum site-wide announcement like before, such a shame as it was probably one of the best placements the forum had ROI wise.

We keep a small piece of advertising here now, which is one sticky thread in the link building section, even that isn't great since they began allowing 15+ threads to be sticky, the good old days of it being max 6 threads and ACTUALLY STANDING OUT are gone. However as it stands with the market place being so over-crowded the stickies are a necessity.

So from your experience Stickies help?
I'm asking because there are so many of them. Do people actually notice them more? I tend to look past stickies.

I am pretty sure your low CTR because of banner design and copy.

It's your job to 'persuade' visitors to click your ads.

To do that you should learn about that site demographic etc

Ohh yes. Prices there are 10 times higher of what it is actually worth. Thats why you are negative on them.

Have to agree with this. Have you tried contacting the webmasters and ask for individual prices? Usually they will go a lot lower than what a network will ask for because the networks want their cut of it as well.

I had a similar experience. Tried putting a banner ad on smallSEOtools.com for a paid SEO tool of mine. Got hundred or so clicks but it was all Indian traffic so didn't make a sale. Sort of what I expected so I wasn't disappointed but it's always worth experimenting with these things.

Yes of course only direct contact. You will get better prices of course. And you need to buy at least 150000 impressions better 300000 and you will defo see some sales.

amazing insight, but it seems that your forum selection was bad, also did you get any conversions?

Can't tell, because I didn't track them (yes, dumb).
During this period I'm getting sales, but it's not the only place where I advertise, so it's hard to tell.

Some banners on certain sites actually give a d0follow link from it (straight from the homepage), so if it's cheap it might be worth it just for the strong link. Maybe? :p One of my competitors top 5 strongest link is just that; a homepage banner ad. Price: $300/month. Hmm.

Interesting case study, I was actually just about to try banner ads on a forum. I wonder if it might be harder to sell in the SEO niche compared to say, camping?

    Thanks for the share!

The month is almost up. I bought 30000 impressions, I've gotten 28743 so far.
I probably could improve the banner design and all, but for $170, 30000 impressions, the click count is just ridiculous.

    Here are the stats:

If I've seen a similar case study before I bought this, I wouldn't even have bothered in buying these ads.

While hindsight is 20/20, OP is right that if he never tried he'd never know. Because you have much deeper knowledge of the situation, only you know the risk behind such an investment in the downhill forums.

Side note, how have results from advertising on BHW been compared to WF?
