It is not uncommon for someone to adopt a "western name" if they are in a culture that is western and they are from a different culture.

I have a great friend, and one that I respect highly, who goes by John and is from Cambodia, yet his real name is something entirely different.

Aside from his family, I am pretty sure I am the only one that calls him by his given name.
