I am done with oDesk

It's hard, but that's what you get for $1-2 /hr.
But it's not just the price, I have had issues with contractors $10+ :/

i just hired someone off odesk the otherday and am very happy with work, here are some suggestions to use when hiring people

only people with 4.5+ stars
make sure they have either lots of billed hours or projects completed
go through and actually read feedback people have written
put specific questions into job posting and see if they answered them
interview them and make sure they understand EVERYTHING completely

mate the issue is your fault.

odesk is like any public work force. there are good workers and bad workers.

I always have my odesk hires do a small test before I hire them. That means that I dont have to deal with hiring someone that doesnt know what they are doing and I get to see how we work together first.

ALways have them do a small test first to see results. Dont just hire them and expect for them to do it right.
 
There is someone out there that will do the job great on ODesk, but there is a problem - are you willing to pay the price? I see a plethora of article writing jobs on the site, but people want everything for $1. If your rates are too low or you are not willing to devote your time to training them, it will be a lost cause.
 
I hate oDesk, in my school life I was on the top 5 for SEM on oDesk and my feedback has always been 5/5 but they suspended my account without telling me a single reason.
 
Not everyone in there like what OP mentioned in there but many are,you need to look beyond good amount of hours in there & ask specific regarding your question to get what you are looking for.Only when you are satisfied completely with person answers then hire someone.
 
Since this is a thread bashing odesk, I would just put my 2 cents. I had been using odesk both as a programmer for over 7 years and recently as an employer for my projects. I have seen the flip sides of both the things.

odesk is crap

noob seo guys have 3-5 accounts there, bidding on all projects, work quality sucks, bhw hire a freelancer section is much awesome (pricey, but work gets done)

I only hope that beacuse of it was HIGH PR directory list moderators will not approve it.

And this is not only experience most of these guys deliver dead links etc..

its all about having a good hiring process. its really that simple.

think outside the box when hiring on odesk, make them jump through a few hoops before you ever interview one.

i've found great talent on odesk
 
I did a lot of freelancing on elance. There are two problems:

1. People wanting the earth for a pittance. Which then pushes them into using poor quality freelancers.
2. Poor instructions, or not really knowing what they want. net result, they are never happy with the results.

I now earn from clients I got from elance who now send me work off it. Look for quality and then build a relationship with them. And pay them a living wage!
 
Ive had much better luck hiring freelancers here, rather than oDesk. You may have to pay a bit more, but you get what you pay for.
