dude, don't tell your group anything....you should keep the laptop for yourself. Your just that much smarter...you tell them, and you could get caught....

This is a competition where I create a website about a hot topic. The website has been planned out and I have specifically made it seo friendly and hopefully I can push them to write a bunch of content

I think most of you are looking at things too short sighted!
you have an opportunity to get a 'team' together
, and do more projects in the future.
yes show them only part of the game, and do not let them know how much you may be making. but give the 4? say...1/2 of the profits, and get them to do 80-90% of the work!
just another way to look at things...keep all of the $$ from the one project or 1/2 from a LOT of projects...
in either case good luck on your try for that laptop.

In addition to offering to treat them out to pizza, offer to smoke them out with the fattest blunt you can get. They'll be happy. It's really easy to satisfy young people. Jk...

Here we are on a forum site that is built on sharing ideas with other people to make money, and yet nearly all the advice in this thread is to not tell others or share anything with his team.
That is short-sighted thinking. Tell them, and share the profits. Like advised above you could build a team that in the long run could churn out lots of new content and sites and make damn good money. You certainly aren't going to make a fortune with this single school project site so why not share? The potential for the future is endless.
Now since the teacher is "authority" I certainly tell the team NOT to say anything to them. We don't share with authority figures.

I agree with hotwicked. If you don't tell them, at least one of them will find out and tell the rest. They'll all be pissed and you won't get anything out of them. In fact, they might even rat you out and get you disqualified.
If you were hiring them to do the work, that'd be one thing and employees should never know all the pieces of the puzzle. You and your friends are supposed to be a team and that means working together toward a common goal and an equal share.
Tell them what you're doing but insist they keep it within the group. Also tell them, if it works out, you'd like to do even more stuff with them. No telling where it could go. If the whole team banks, it could be a life changing experience for you all.
