Is it bad to use hyphens in the domain? I heard this someone saying on this forum. True or false?

I would not say it is bad but it does impact on the domain value eg w**.the-press.c** will not be worth as much as w**.thepress.c**

But in my experience for SEO and indexing for me there has never been a problem with the hyphen

if you expect most of your visitors to be type-in, they it would be bad to have hyphens.

The hyphen actually affects seo. google treat hyphen as space then you can rest assured that you have no problem ranking for your site. However, if you are building a brand, using hyphen is not a good idea. For example, applestore.com is better than apple-store.com as someone refer his/her friend about your site, he/she will almost say the site without the hyphen.

I have a site that has hyphens in the url and it gets about 35,000 - 40,000 UV a month from the search engines and generates an average of $3,000.00 monthly so I would say hyphens are not necessarily bad.

That being said, you still have to do the on site and off site SEO and work to get the site ranked for your keyword set.

no problem is you use hypens to your url or your domain. have 3 hypens domain and it ranked well #1 than 40 million results. but no hypen is better.

i agree with what everyone has said already. from an SEO standpoint its fine. but from a "brandability" standpoint, its a dealbreaker. if all of your traffic is coming from the search engines there's no reason to avoid hyphens but if you want an extremely brandable site or you may someday sell the site or domain name, avoiding hyphens is a good idea

Not everyone. This guy quoted bellow said that hyphens are even BETTER for seo (and this is whitehat SEO subforum, I am sure the OP knows about brandability and all, but he asks about seo)

So the question is:

HYPHEN EVEN BETTER FOR SEO?

seo-services.com better than seoservices.com ? Because first one has actuall 2 words so its clear for google that kw is "seo services" ?

We've been running a hyphenated URl until recently (changed it to a much shorter URL) and had a very good first page rank for a very highly competitive key phrase.

I've heard hyphens are treated as a space so having them between keywords with a little seo shouldn't hurt your SERPS. If you are looking at banking on type ins hyphens are the worst way to go

How many websites do you see ranking first page with hypens in url? Bloody loads!

There's your answer right there.
