Huge decrease in SERPs?

Backlinks are made all the time - always posting quality content - the domains over a year old and had a solid position for months. One of my sites earlier this week worked it way up from number 5 or 6(i don't remember precisely) to number 2 for the keyword i'm targeting. I start making good money and then within 3 days it jumps back to page 3(i was on page one for months) and then finally page 8. Normally i find sh*t like this tends to last around a week, and then it comes back up either higher or close to where you were before.
