The website is ranking for 3.5 million keywords, its everywhere if you do any sort of keyword research.
It's talked about on Facebook and reddit.
I'm pretty sure its been mentioned on search console community.
You can't create a website so big which is essentially stealing other peoples content and fly under the radar.
It already has a bunch of DMCA takedown requests logged against it. Its likely its days a numbered.

The thing is, it would make sense to me if these guys were doing this with adsense connected to bank some while they still have the website up.

But why are they doing this to get traffic and not monetize it? Makes no sense to me

Adsense might be denied or possibly banned seeing as all the content is essentially stolen without consent.
Obviously other networks are available, but you'd probably need to look at the dodgy ones to get approved.
