I'm looking to find web design clients, but I don't know where to start. I've had a client, but it was a family member. How would you find work?

Advertise on freelancer sites, start a BST here when you reach the requirements for JrVip, look for shit websites and offer your services, look for people requesting site building here or on other forums and sites.

So many different ways.

Pick 5 offline business niches.

Search for all the businesses in those niches and in your area (search google, physically go out and look, search local listing sites etc).

Categorise them by their online presence - great website, good website, bad website, no website.

Email/call/letter then with a proposal as well as what their competitors are doing and what they are missing out on.

Couldn't really say, I don't use them.

@davids355 has posted some good tips above as well.

Another tip, when you see a business advertised using just a hotmail or gmail address you could contact them and offer your services if it's obvious they don't already have a website.

Or have a website but never bothered to setup an account on the domain. So many people and shit hosts/devs let this happen.
Good way to sell them on the benefit of a level of professionalism in a branded email addy.

Good idea. Maybe you can use a footprint to search for those like -
Plumbers and area and gmail.com or something.

You could also pay someone to scrape loads of contact details from some local biz sites - even better if you can find premium listings - like yell in the uk.
Then mail them saying hey do you realise you are paying these sites a premium when you could do it yourself with a one time investment. Etc etc.

Most of the clients have moved to PPH or UPWORK I'd say - which is why you see an increased demand in their aged accounts.

As you're in the States, looking offline would be much more profitable than looking online.

You'll have to set up a functional website with bits of portfolio as well, at least.

My 2 cents as a freelance web designer for 11+ years :)

It is say'd before, but for my cousing is worked great. Search for website that are not responsive. Email them an offer and show some numbers of the importance of responsive websites.

GL!

Oh yea of course. That's a good one as well.

It's the best thing about this niche - you can easily see for every prospect exactly what they are lacking so the sale should be much easier.

I have a few examples that are representative and presentable. Ill check out behance, thanks.

I know I started this a long time ago. But what would be a way for finding these types of sites.?

Where can I find people like this? How much could it cost to find someone to scrape the data.

Where can you advertise just an email address? I can't find places like that.

keep an eye out for new businesses that pop up

facebook searching town name and grand opening

newspaper grand opening ads

online newspaper, scour ads for ones that dont contain website

craigslist hiring sections, biz that are hiring but dont have a site
