    Alright,

So I have a page that I now manage for a partner of mine and the SEO on page content is a little messy.

Lets say 2 different pages on the site are ranking for [service]+[city] and [service]+[district] plus a mix of long tail related. So in an attempt to get to the front page of google for these keyword im going to distinctively split the 2 keywords one for the [district] and one for the overall [city].

Now my question is the keywords that are ranking on the wrong page right now, lets say its pos number 13 for a district related KW but its on the city page currently being moved to its own page which i will internally link to it from the existing page with anchor text with the KW in it...

How long will it take google to realize and switch the page?

Is this going to hurt me for long or benefit me?

Ok I will try to be as clear as possible....

I have 2 sets of keywords that i want to rank for, 1 set is [service]+[entire city]... the second set is [service]+[district in the city]

I have 2 pages that these are ranking for.... home and about

google is ranking some district and some city to home page, and some district and some city kw to about page....

I am clearly separating them by making the home page about the entire city and the about page focused on the district keywords.

Now when I do this the district KW's that are ALREADY ranking on the home page/entire city page will need to be changed by google and hopefully not lost all together with the content change.

    LOL

It will happen pretty quick - when I am making on page changes I normally see results within a week tops. I guess this depends how often Google crawls your site.

I understand what you are saying as well, but there is no guarantee that what you are trying to do will work.

Why not look at it from another angle - forget about the aesthetics of it, pick the best keyword for each page and optimise that to begin with, then you have a clear and simple goal and you are not risking losing rankings just for tidiness...?

And basically my question was, is this a good practice? Or leave Google ranking both pages for such similar KWs and just build more backlinks.

Well that's basically what I did by picking the district for the one and the entire city for the other... The problem was is some of the Long tail and LSI keywords that go with them and are related to them were already ranked on opposite pages pretty high. You get what I'm saying? It's a bit hard to explain.

Its hard to say. But if it was me I would be listing all of the keywords for each page, then ranking them by priority - how close you are to being ranked, how much volume, competition, whether its bringing in traffic etc. And then work on them accordingly. It is a difficult question but basically I think dont worry if its messy, just work out the best strategy for improving rank overall.

Like if you can optimize a page for keyword A that is in #9 and gets 10,000 searches a month and you are risking 5 other keywords that arent really related to keyword A and are in position #9 and get a total of 2000 searches a month then go for it.

Good call thanks for the advice. Yeah there is only one KW that I'm really worried about at this point and I'm leaving that one on the page it's already ranking for so i will just optimize around that. The other ones that are ranking in the teens might be lost for a while but I think will come back better in time with more targeted content on the other page.

This could be messy because Google understands the semantics of the district being in the city. I think pointing some very concise local links or citations at the district page could help with your targeting. Of course, refreshing the content and on-page for both geo-pages will help as well.

Another option might be to combine the two pages and create something more robust to include both geos, then 301 the district page to the city page. That strategy might make it difficult to craft a meta title and description that will touch on your target city and district, as well as have a good CTA for increasing CTR.

Hmm see as of right now the home page is ranking and it only has pictures on it... It's ranking for one important keyword at 13 as of before the content change. So this is why I decided to do this, the about page has to remain the same as it's the clients story but I would just do a little more pinpointing (making it more about the specific district) since itself is ranking in the teens for a few nice keywords as well.
