As others said, is valuable only if
- your site tries to rankin google.com.au as the sample is from .com.au
- your site is built to last
- is a valuable article (you better off writing it yourself or hiring someone else than the contributor shown in the sample)
- you understand 1 link alone does nothing. Specially a page with 0 PA like a new article would be.

All said, I'd go for it if you are ok with all the points above and you have 10k$+ budget.

You are being scammed if you are paying $800. Or the seller is scammed by his source (or high up in some reseller chain, something you always want to avoid when buying links. Mayn people claim they buy from the source, but they don't).

All Huffington Post links I have seen so far, no matter if $100, $500 oder $1000 are done via guest authors, called "contributors". It's not their editorial staff. Everybody with some writing skills can become a contributor and once you have an account and contributed some quality content, you can pretty much publish any crap, there is almost no moderation for appoved contributors. Some people pay existing contributors instead, makes things more expensive. Same with Engadget and some other sites with a contributor system. These are not links done by any editorial stuff and that's the reason why they are always buried deeply, far away from the mainpage.

For $85 it's a nice deal, although this $5 article from the example utterly sucks. But a good article doesn't justify a $715 difference in price.

Agreed. The most I would be willing to pay these days is about $200-$300 for the convenience. But any higher than that (and more) I would expect it to be an actual editorial article, not the "contributors" section where it's pretty much unmoderated and pretty much unfindable from the main pages.

Go for it. It's much better than paying thousands for the same link.
 
It depends upon what you targets are. News site backlinks are aimed at giving you a new stream of traffic.

Out of curiosity, let's say that was a quality article with a do-follow link on the US version of HuffPo- and you sent a few powerful SAPE links at that page. (Any maybe a GSA blast for link volume).

Am I correct in thinking 1- you'd get some pretty sweet link juice funneled to your money site. 2- that parasite page would have a great shot of top 3 for your keyword in Google, so you'd get a bunch of traffic to that parasite page and could Funnel the traffic to you money site

As others have said, this type of link is super valuable. I'd be careful of buying it on Fiverr.
