How to structure blog categories for SEO?

it depends on...

- how many main topics / categories you have, or want to cover
- what your (current AND future) vision for your site is
 
Silo structure is great for SEO because it organizes content by topic. It helps Google see your site as an expert in that area. Flat is easier, but silo gives better rankings over time.

I noindex, follow categories. It’s dup content. Unless you’re worried about url structure, but why? This is 2016 SEO. Not necessary anymore.
 
Silos work well in the long run if you create topical depth. I use 2-level silos max and keep internal linking tight. Flat is fine for micro sites, but structure is important for authority sites. Also agree - there's no need to index category pages unless they provide real value.

Silo structure is better for SEO. Because, it organizes content into clear, topic-related groups, helping Google understand your site better. Flat is easier but less powerful. So, use silos with main categories and related subcategories for better rankings and user experience. It is not fixed rule but my experience better with silo structure.

Do you use schema? If you use schema like you should be the url structure is inherently unimportant.

Yes, I use schema.
But I don't completely agree that URL structure is unimportant.

Schema helps search engines understand content better, of course.

Still, a clean and logical URL structure supports site hierarchy and user trust.

For larger sites, both schema and a solid structure are important.

Flat or siloed — depends on niche and content depth.

It was important. But you can continue adding that to your things to think about if you like. I don’t add categories to the url anymore. I use schema instead for a cleaner and shorter url.

I also don’t build micro sites. I’m in Ecom and build authority information sites in my niche that also rank to better sell my products. I have multiple of these on the same topics and ranking for the same keywords.

I guess I have no clue *shrugs*
 
For SEO, both flat and silo structures work, but silo is generally better for authority and relevance. Flat can work for smaller blogs, but if you plan to grow, go for a silo structure.

Flat’s fine when your blog is small and simple—using just one or two levels of categories is easy to manage and fast to crawl without overhead , and Once you cover multiple themes, structuring posts into silos or topic‑hubs sharpens your authority, helps Google see the relationships, and keeps internal links focused , also But don’t rigidly silo everything—over‑isolated content can hurt flexibility, so most SEOs now prefer a pyramid or topic‑cluster layout that still groups content while letting related posts cross‑link where it makes sense .
 
Both structures are useful in their own place. If you have limited content, a flat structure is manageable and crawl‑friendly. But if the niche is large and you’re covering multiple subtopics, a silo structure helps search engines understand the hierarchy. Personally, I use a hybrid of silo + internal linking to optimize both SEO and user navigation.
