how to promote a donation site

At least four times a year I send money to Brazil to feed hungry people there. My contribution is small and can reach only a few people.
I was talking to a friend of mine and he told me that if develop a website it would be a great way to scale that and eventually help more people, even in different areas, such children literacy and people with cancer.

What is the best way to promote a website in order to get donations?

Well, I have friends who do charity and non-profit web sites, so just right off the bat, here is some stuff I can think of (assuming you are doing this completely legit):

1. Register a non-profit organization.
2. Have ALL contact info on the web site. No contact info will make it look shady.
3. I'd definitely do some local events with churches, schools, Rotary, Kiwanis and other charitable organisations and take pictures for credibility.
4. Get statements from formidable business people that have used your service, or even better, from groups/clubs/schools etc that you have worked with.
5. Get listed at other non-profit web sites that you can refer to for credibility.

I think it's a lot about credibility, because it's hard to get ppl to donate just because of a website. You need pictures, videos, local appearances etc.

Credibility is the best feature to present indeed. It's too small and I don't have any pictures yet. When I go to Brazil next time I will take some picture and possibly shoot a video too.

First of all, good for you for doing charity work. I'm also starting a Non-Profit soon and have been fiddling with different ideas on how I'll go about promoting it.

In addition to gaining credibility, promoting the site will consist of any method you'd normally use to promote a site. Get relevant back links, create videos, a Squidoo page outlining what your organization does, and so on. Just adjust your keywords to focus on on what your charity does, etc.

I would recommend going into social networking sites like Myspace or Facebook to promote your non-profit charity work. Create a charity group in the networks, add lots of friends to your list. Send out a viral message asking people to forward this message for the sake of charity(most people will depending on how creative you are in constructing the message) Leave comments at hot-profiles which link to your charity website.

I found some websites on the internet that I will associate with them, specially RED Cross organization. They are pretty big and they even sell stuff on the website. wow

My mom said that the most important help for the next season it would be "blankets", because when is summer in USA is winter in Brazil. Let's see what I can do about it and get some blankets to send there or maybe I buy there, which one is cheaper.

I think you can use social bookmarking sites like myspace etc to let people know whats hapening

It wont be seeing as a sale since you are trying to help people
