If you were to list the key factors that work well for sites on a general level, what would they be?

e.g. title length, number and position of keywords etc

Has anyone found a rule of thumb for what works best with google?

There are now 100's of ranking factors - and plenty of great SEO guides here to read ;););)

Personally though, I carry out a lot of research for creating an article - starting with my layout, headings and quality images....

Cheers

I consider the best methods of SEO is methods that you will not find anywhere else. It's unknown to textbooks and any seo masters. You have to come up with something individual and it can work. The popularity of the method reduces its value.

Nothing too smart here: put the main keyword into a title.
There are 3 most popular recipes:
  1. *Brandname* - Keyword
  2. Keyword - *Brandname*
  3. Keyword
You can use another separator like "." or "|"

That's it, good luck!

It's really an art to master the title tag optimization imo.

I try to stuff with as many keywords as possible (but not over-optimize). As follows...
  • What works for me is to include exact match keyword in first 50% of the title.
  • Include a brand. Either right at the start or the very end.
  • Partially Include related keyword. For example: My keyword is dog food but I also sell dog collars. I would include ...Dog Food & Collars... (notice how I did not repeat the word dog)
  • Then I also like to play with things for CTR like capital words, weird signs etc.
  • I maximize it always (65 characters)
