How to make Firefox and Windows faster?

Well of course running fewer instances of FF works better, 100%. But that's not what I wanna do :)

So FF is a memory hog, I agree. But what makes it such a memory hog? Any good tips on what I can edit in Firefox to make it less of a memory hog but still keep it functional?

I use Firefox Portable v56 by the way.

I think you missed what I was saying, I was not saying that if you run 1 FF instance then your computer will run quicker overall I was saying that you may find that 5 instances actually run faster, producing more results, than running 15 instances that are all bogged down.

If you are in a situation where every processes is trying to get access to system resources that just aren't there then you could well be lowering overall results by having more instances.

For example, I have a software that can run 1000 threads if you want to but for most people 50-100 threads will be far faster than having 500 threads purely because at 500 threads their internet connection is blocked so everything is really slow for all threads and timeouts occur all the time slowing everything down.

Long story short is that disabling some Windows features that are using up a few megabytes and CPU cycles is highly unlikely to make a lick of difference when you are using multiple instances of a browser known for being a memory hog with scripts on a machine with just 4Gb memory. I dunno what makes it a memory hog, I just don't use it much because it is such a resource hog and slower than alternatives.

Try cloudready . i use it on an old laptop and its very fast. You can use the linux ap with it

Okay. I installed 2 more extensions on each of my Firefoxes. One is called Data Server Proxy Extension (thanks @HoNeYBiRD), and the other Save-Data: On. It's my understanding they perform different tasks. I installed them, will test them out for a few days/weeks and see how things work.

I also did a Google search and I'm going through about 8 blog posts about speeding up Windows. For example:

https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-make-windows-8-faster/
https://www.itechfever.com/make-windows-8-faster/

Most things they mention I've pretty much already done. However, I just saw something scary. For some reason the hard drive on my lap top has 57.4 GB free of 460 GB. What. The. Fuck? o_O Junk much? The lap top has nothing on it. I literally have about 10 GB of files on it, and nothing else.

So I did the disc cleanup thing and after it finished loading it only allows me to free up about 1 GB of storage. Then I did "Clean up system files" and now I'm able to clean up about 3 GB of storage. I'm not understanding what's taking up 350 GB of space. I mean, the free space I have is about 60 GB and let's say Windows and my files use another 50 GB, that's 110GB total out of 460. So that means that 350 GB is filled with, junk? I just restarted the lap top, figured the C: drive may be wrong with the notification there. But no, after restart it still shows 57.4 GB free of 460 GB.

I opened the C: drive and selected all folders in it and opened Properties. All of them combined show 25GB space used. Where is all that space going? So anyway I ran Disc Cleanup and restarted when it was done. The space is pretty much the same. I have no idea what all this space is filled with...

I also checked the Defragmenter. It seems I have "Scheduled Optimizations On" on a weekly basis. So drives are being optimized automatically. But I did Analyze and then I started Defragment on my C: drive like 2 hours ago, because why not. After it get completed I'll restart the lap top and check, any if my C: drive is still saying 57.4 GB free of 460 GB or something ridiculous like that, I'll format it.

I haven't formatted this lap top in over a year. I think I'll do that at this point. I don't know what else to do. Plus a format is always nice. A little rebirth, start anew :)

So I'll put this thread on hold until i finish the defrag and/or the formatting. Then I'll reply to you guys that replied and continue working on this. Thanks :)

This is a retarded as fuck thread. You have 4GB ram and windows 8 or windows 10 and you are complaining about it being slow. Let me be totally fucking honest. There is fuck all you can do about it. 4GB on windows is fucking nothing . It doesnt matter how many tricks you do it will make no fdifference the problem is the RAM you have is not enough.

It sounds like your problem is you are a fucking cheapskate and cannot spent even $30 to buy some more ram. Put another 4GB ram in there and boom your problem is sorted. to be honest i wouldnt even use less than 12GB with windows. That $30 is saving you a shitload of anger and rage at a slow pc.

If you cant upgrade the ram the only other option you have is to rent a windows VM in the cloud. (EG. paperspace you can get a 12GB windows vm with A GPU for $5-10 per month. Not bad ).

A small thing you can do AFTER getting more ram is upgrade to windows 10 and uninstall all the shit (msn news, games, apps) that fucking slows windows down. This requires some skillz to use powershell . anyway here is some an example scripts that will do the job for you (run with admin privileges):
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=chocolatey+minimum+install+script+gist&oq=chocolatey+minimum+install+script+gist

Finally when you've done all of the above you'll realize the ultimate answer: windows is shit, will always be shit and sucks like hell. Then you'll have an epiphany and start using linux or mac. Ubuntu is even better than mac and the ultimate option (preferably xubuntu for a true experience) .but admittedly requires a serious skillz upgrade. But for anyone who doesn't see the value in learning about technology..... well you're fucked anyway in this day and age.

Defragmentation won't help with recovering free space. Depending on the defragmentation type you run, normally it puts the files next to each other and makes a big contiguous free space, but it doesn't/can't make more free space.

Instead of running disk defrag run CHKDSK from command prompt as an administrator, maybe the drive is damaged.
This is the exact command you should type in:
chkdsk c:/f
It will prompt you to restart the machine, after restart it will start checking and fixing the errors, if any.

Another reason reason can be that the disk is partitioned and not all of the partitions are formatted, maybe this is the most possible, that's a lot of free space which is missing. You can check and format a partition using the built-in Disk Management: https://www.pcworld.com/article/248980/how-to-partition-and-format-your-hard-drive-in-windows.html

If none of these works, just format the disk and reinstall OS. That will surely help unless the disk is beyond repair.

More ram for sure, ssd optionally.
Im running similar scripts with 200 firefox instances per server so you can be sure i know what im talking about.

I see you dont want to make any upgrades, but there is no way around that.
1. If you run FF for a long time it will eat shitload of ram (1gb and more is possible), now think how much ram you have. When your lap is out of ram it starts to use hdd instead of ram, hdd is slow as fuck compared to ram and thats why your pc is lagging.

2. Dont install any plugins, extensions in this portable firefox instances. Plugins are traceable, if you do something on some site they can track whole your activity because of plugins you use.

Run only 1 portable firefox instance as long as you need to run it. Check ram usage in task manager for this firefox instance. Multiply this ram usage by number of firefox instances you want to run. Add 30-50% to this number just for safety and you have an amount of ram you need. Upgrade ram, done.

3. Ssd here wont make any big changes unless you want to run really alot firefox instances (20 and more). Focus on more ram.

Hi, I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question but I've actually been needing some help getting started with Firefox Portable browser user profiles. I've never used them before but I just purchased a new PayPal and I need to use a Firefox Portable browser but I also have to put the cookies file into this new user to make sure the PayPal account doesn't get limited. Do you know anything about transferring the cookies? I can't get it figured out and I'm super eager to get started because I paid $1k for this account! anyways, let me know if you can help plzz

temporary files, junk, cookies etc. start adding up on your pc. Once it gets buggy and slow, run ccleaner and do a scan. I am sure these files are taking up a lot of storage and slowing down the laptop.
ram usage might also be another issue.

You hit heavy bro! :)

You're right, the defrag didn't do shit as far as that goes.

I ran chkdsk. After restarting the lap top it took its sweet time doing "Scanning and repairing drive." After it was done I checked, the C: drive is still at some 60GB free of 460GB.

Then I checked the partition thing. Even though I never do partitions when installing an operating system. If there are any partitions I remove them, and just install everything on the C: drive. I always do this. What can I say, I'm a simple man :p

In Computer Management I got for the C: drive - Capacity 460 GB | Free space: 57 GB | %Free 12%

Down low I got - 300MB Healthy (Recovery Partition) | 100MB Healthy (EFI System Partition) | 112MB Unallocated | 460GB Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dumps, Primary Partition | 4.33 GB Unallocated.

When I do right-click in order to do Format anything, the "Format" button is grayed out, can't be clicked.

No matter. I'm glad I checked these things. Now I'll format the lap top and that will/should solve it.

Again... loooove me some radical solutions :D

Again... loooove me some radical solutions
Well, you got answers here from people who make living by making bots and selling them on BHW like @jimbobo2779, and others who know their stuff and still.... you are looking for other way. There is no other way, upgrade ram instead of wasting your time.

Hdd dont have influence on performance in your case.
More free space wont help.
Format wont help.

Okay. Some of you asked, so I'm preparing an 8 hour video for this thread (it's a series of 20 videos 8 hours each).

Jokes aside...

As a side note. I have one very old lap top. I'll also be implementing the same stuff on it that I'm talking about here. To make it also as functional as possible. I formatted it yesterday and installed a fresh Windows 7 on it, and I've been running updates for a few hours.

Now the lap top I've been talking about...

I had a problem. Trying to install Windows 8.1 on it failed. I went through the process, formatted the drive, ran the installer, and at 8% during installation I got this error:

0x8007025D.png

I tried changing USB ports (the lap top has no cd/dvd rom, so I must use USB to install the OS on it). I tried formatting and deleting drives. Going to BIOS and changing to Legacy mode. I tried a bunch of things and each time at 8% during installation I would get the error above :weep:

Ultimately, in trying to get it working I opened command prompt and did something where I converted the USB drive to MBR. Frankly, I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing. I was kinda pissed so I was just clicking and entering, clicking and entering boys :p

This means I dug myself in deeper, as now my USB wasn't even being recognized by the lap top. So I took out the USB and plugged it in my main lap top (runs Windows 10). It recognized the USB, but it wouldn't open it. Meaning, it was visible in My Computer. But I could still not open it. After a bit of research I opened CMD and did the stuff needed to restore the USB drive. But in restoring it I had to Format it. So now it was clean, empty, but at least recognizable.

So even though I was sure this wouldn't work, I figured fuck it, and I installed an ISO image of Windows 8.1 on the USB (it's the same image I had previously installed on the USB, about 4 years ago). And I used Rufus to install it, just as I did 4 years ago. Same everything.

When it was done I plugged it in my old lap top and ran the installer again, being certain it would not work. Why would it work? It's the same USB, the same ISO, the same formatting, the same Rufus installation, everything is exactly the same.

It worked! upload_2018-11-10_18-23-21.gif:);)

Hahaha I can't believe it. Windows just installed on the lap top and now I'm good to go. Fuck yeah!

How these weird things happen is beyond me.

I guess... it's hot dog, not hot dog... it's technology:

img404.jpg

So anyway, I need to run updates on the lap top, and also finish running updates on the old lap top, and then implement all the stuff I've previously discussed in this thread - disable indexing and disable system restore, and make power High Performance, and disable Animations, etc etc etc. When I complete all of that I'll come back to continue (I want to check what someone mentioned about using external USBs to complement memory, and to use BAT file to have the lap top automatically restart every X hours, and we'll see what else).

Thanks are looking up :)

After installing the OS on both lap tops (Win 7 on one and Win 8.1 on another) I had a problem on both to where Windows Updates would get stuck on "Checking for Updates." I looked around online and found a solution. Had to install some updates manually, and then I could use Windows Updates normally. I fully updated both lap tops.

On my oldest lap top, I installed Windows 7 on it and I had some crack (REMOWAT) but it wouldn't work anymore. So I found a different one that works (Windows Activator), so now it's valid. Good good :)

Oh, guess what, now my lap top - the one we've been talking about - the C: drive says - 451 GB free of 465 GB  @HoNeYBiRD

Format did the trick. I knew it would :)

Okay so I implemented everything we discussed so far, and took care of everything. Both lap tops are already functioning much better. Especially optimizing Visual Effects for Best Performance on Windows - Huge Change for the better, HUGE!

I also found a file on my hard drive where I wrote how to kill shit in Windows and a few other tweaks to speed shit up. Like going into Services and setting a bunch of services to Manual and then stopping them - Application Experience (changed to task in Windows 10), Diagnostic Policy Service, Distributed Link Tracking Client, IP Helper, Offline Files, Program Compatibility Assistant Service, Portable Device Enumerator Service, Secondary Logon, Security Center, Windows Error Reporting Service, and Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). Also turning off windows firewall, bla bla bla.

So that's all done and done!

@Scorpion Ghost have you tried firefox ESR version instead of usual firefox?

I'm just quoting this to say I took a look at ESR, but I'll stick with regular Firefox. Thanks :)

Upgrade your RAM Memory as 8 GB mate

This lap top is like an old car. I don't wanna invest money in the old car, I just want to ride the way it is 'till it dies!

Only SSD will make difference!

This lap top is like an old car. I don't wanna invest money in the old car, I just want to ride the way it is 'till it dies!

That is a very basic laptop. So yeah expect to face issues from time to time in 2018. If I was you, I would have bought an i3 laptop +4 gb ram and swapped the hdd with an ssd.

So, you mean macbooks don't have any kind of tech issues like the one OP is having? No freezing, no lagging, and nothing?

This lap top is like an old car. I don't wanna invest money in the old car, I just want to ride the way it is 'till it dies!

If you don't want to buy things, maybe automation will help you. If you have to restart the laptop by hand every 10 hrs, then maybe it's good to make it restart by itself every 6-8 hrs, by using a .bat file
I can't help you with the code, but Google will know it.

I'm quoting this because I will get around to looking into this shortly. This would be Amazing if I can pull it off. Amazing idea. Thanks :)

uhhh also something else totaly forgot,,, if you have an usb extra that you dont use . you can make it a part of windows so when the spare memory it is used by firexfox it also uses the memory of usb stick , also you can do that by using your hdd dedicate a part of hdd for more space ram ) Kinda like swap in linux .. But yeah if you are looking for that pc this are the things that you can do effects off programs and drivers that boot in begining off . but the best situation would be linux , i mean regarding the script most of windows scripts work on linux so give it a shot to see if you can make it , test your script on linux live cd and if it works just switch that helps way to much with memory , also dont try if someone tells you try windows xp , since none of the websites of browsers anymore opens on windows xp

I'm quoting this because I will get around to looking into this shortly. I actually do have 2 USBs that I don't really use. One is ancient and only has 128 MB, the other is recent and has 8 GB on it. This would be Amazing if I can pull it off. Amazing idea. Thanks :)

Disable pagefile

I actually ran into this in one article - https://fossbytes.com/speed-up-windows-performance-tips/

I don't understand what this does exactly, so I will look into it and decide if I'll do something with this or not. Thanks :)

You're saying the same thing. If I run 1 instance it will run quicker than if I run 5, and running 5 will run quicker than if I run 15. I've already established the max instances the lap top can handle. It's 5 browsers running at the same time. I've already established that.

I understand. Thanks for the explanation. Crystal clear.

Well, it may not make a big difference, but it'll make a lick of difference. I really stripped Windows of a lot of "rings and bells" already. I'm going to hack Firefox next. Also what some other members mentioned, I'll try to set up USB to help with memory, and set up an automated restart every X hours. All these things will make it faster and better. I can already tell a lick of difference towards the better :)

This is a retarded as fuck thread. You have 4GB ram and windows 8 or windows 10 and you are complaining about it being slow. Let me be totally fucking honest. This thread is not retarded. You are retarded. Fuck you.

I am a cheapskate, or maybe I'm not, fuck you again.

I have no anger and rage at THIS slow PC. I understand the PC is old and there's only so much it can handle. But I am working towards making it as efficient as possible considering its specs and age. And I'm very happy with the progress I've achieved so far with things I've discovered and with things productive members here contributed to my thread.

Thank you for the advice, but I am not looking to spend money. I don't need to. This lap top is like an old car. I don't wanna invest money in the old car, I just want to ride the way it is 'till it dies!

Windows may be shit, I don't know. Windows is all I've ever used. But I am extremely busy and have no time to start learning a new operating system. Maybe some day, but not any time soon.

Thank you :)

More ram for sure, ssd optionally.
Im running similar scripts with 200 firefox instances per server so you can be sure i know what im talking about.

1. I will implement (if successful) automated restarts on the lap top every X hours. That should actually deal with this. We'll see, I'll have to test it out.

2. I don't care if I'm traceable. The things I'm doing, the way I do them, being traceable or untraceable is not important to me at all. I don't give a shit. But thanks for the advice.

I've already established I can run 5 Firefoxes for about 10 hours before it starts losing its mind. That's all the lap top can handle. I don't need to check ram usage, I already know.

3. Not looking to spend money, but if I were I should focus on Ram. Got it. Crystal clear. Thank you :)

The portable Firefox will always retain the same cookies it has on it. If you don't have Cookies to be cleared on restart, and if you don't remove the cookies manually, then the browser will always have the same cookies I'm pretty sure. About transferring cookies, well, I would imagine you can go in the folder of your portable Firefox and locate the folder where the cookies are, and then just move it to the portable Firefox that you want to use for this. But I'm not sure which folder that would be. Look it up on Google.

This is basically THE answer. Run far less instances for some time to figure out what the memory usage on each instance will be and then use that many, once you go over the maximum you will essentially be slowing the whole process down with every new instance.

You can spend weeks tweaking this and that but ultimately you are limited by ram and running that many instances of FF is not gonna happen efficiently with 4Gb.

I already know. It's 5 instances. That's it.

And there is another way. I've been implementing things and hacks to Windows all day. Format, Disable indexing, disable animations, make sure no unnecessary programs run in the background, other things I've done and will do. Of course the lap top won't start flying all of a sudden, but many things can be done to make it faster. I've been doing them.

Thanks :)

Bro, so I just did this, I think.

Here's what I did actually - https://fossbytes.com/how-to-speed-up-windows-using-readyboost-usb-drive/

I read through that article, and it's my understanding that this will actually help. The USB I'm using is a Kingston 8GB 2.0/3.0/3.1. And my lap top has an HDD hard drive. So according to what I read in that article and understood, this will help.

Thanks for that tip :)

If you don't want to buy things, maybe automation will help you. If you have to restart the laptop by hand every 10 hrs, then maybe it's good to make it restart by itself every 6-8 hrs, by using a .bat file
I can't help you with the code, but Google will know it.

Okay bro, I'm setting this up.

I used Windows in-built Task Scheduler to schedule restarts once every 24 hours. I'll see how this works, and if it's not good enough I'll change it to once every 12 hours.

Then I set 5 specific Firefoxes to start when Windows starts. I also made sure I'm logged in on each of those Firefoxes sites (I use 1 site per Firefox profile) and that the login is Remembered.

Then I also set my Firefoxes to start a specific script as soon as they open, each its own. And I edited my scripts, the code, to set the amount of looping on the scripts from within the code instead of me setting it when I run them in the plugin.

I tested it, it all works good. So now I'll test this out a few days, to see how the restarts every 24 hours work. If it's not working out I'll reduce the restarts to every 12 hours.

So this was a fantastic tip, absolutely great, game changer. Thank you very much :)

So I also did some changes to my Portable Firefoxes, in the processes. Just a few things from a few tutorials I read online. Editing in the about:config, slashing and cutting shit out. Not really sure if it will help or not, but I did what I could, I did my best.

Windows is set, Firefoxes are set. It's done! :)

Not looking to spend money
More activity you perform with FF (more sites you visit) more ram it use.
You dont need to restart whole laptop, its enough if you would restart FF alone every 30-60 minutes for example. With such approach you may be able to run more than 5 FF instances at same time.

but many things can be done to make it faster. I've been doing them.
This things wont give you alot extra performance. It will be barely noticeable.
P.S.
Check tools like Zennoposter, BAS (browser automation studio) and similar (free solution - selenium + python). With such tools (you would need to invest money in this tools or learn selenium + python) you can easily automate all you need done and restart FF instances when ram limit is reached.

Also Man 1 last thing , Why update windows at all . I mean i have been operating for years with a crapy pentium pc and it seems at least for me that it gets slow when i update it , when its not updated it works fine , also drivers you just basicaly need graphic driver cpu and network for the thing that you are doing . when you are updating windows you update windows services etc , which has kinda not a lot to do with mozilla since mozilla updates itself with fixes etc, may be worth a shot but for me no updates works faster then with updates, with updates it gets slow as a pc

To be honest, from my experience a Firefox restart helps, but not very much. An actual computer restart is what really helps and sort of refreshes the situation and makes everything run faster and better.

Thanks for the tips :)

Man, it's funny you mention that. It's been many times that I wondered about Windows Updates. In fact I've observed a bit of a slowdown after installing an old installer of a Windows operating system and then updating the Windows updates fully. I have noticed a bit of a slowdown after updating, but I could never be too sure that it's actually slower (since it's basically fresh install of Windows, it's not very noticeable). And I also always assumed I need to stay up-to-date with the updates in order for everything to actually function.

I mean, that's not to say that I don't disable automatic Windows updates. I do. I do the updates manually once in a blue moon.

Well thanks for mentioning that. I may try that next time when I format one of my secondary lap tops :)

As far as what I'm currently doing. My lap top is running better now. I've had 5 instances of Firefox running with the lap top automatically restarting for about 2 days now. It's SO MUCH smoother. In fact, I just added one more Firefox to my startup situation, so now I'll be running 6 Firefoxes at all times, just to see how that works. Because after all is said and done the lap top is running 5 instances and even after 24 hours it's still pretty damn stable. I think it can handle one more.

So I'm testing this now, we'll see how it goes :)
