I think backlink for both cases differs with each other. If you do backlink for each post, you can gain page authority of each page. If you did for homepage, it only helps to gain authority for that page alone.
You can also use internal links building technique for your blog to increase the link juice.

And here is my few cent for you OP,

Building back links for event niche blog completely depends on competition. I would suggest to go for a good anchor text variation but always make most of the links for your primary keyword. Also, you can analyze the backlink of your competitor using tools like SEOProfiler and so on. Be aware, you have to take only top ranked event blog.

Repeat the analysis of all of your competitor, so you can make back links which helps to rank your blog. Hope it helps!

Liked, as you can see few guys replied to this thread it means this question may be hard to answer.
by the way,
in less time we cannot make too many backlinks for posts and homepage too.
so i'm going to experiment on it by making backlinks for homepage only, let's see if i can rank all posts by only that.
