Good point. Sure, you can make some nice money with a site of this type, but there are hundreds or even thousands of similar sites. Being one of the first movers and establishing a site before the hype starts is essential. So, even if you'd launch something similar with better content and more value for visitors now, catching up to an authority site with 8 years of natural link growth isn't realistic.
It's not about having the best product, it's about being among the first and screaming "Here I am" louder than anyone else.

The cool think is once you have a site like this, you could even use a tool like scrapebox to blast comments. You would blast comments, not to earn back links but to create awareness and refer people to your useful tool. When you have a killer site like this you don't need backlinks as much, just a ton of traffic to push out those adsense dollars
