The difference in most cases between #3 and #1 comes down to clicks and traffic. Work on your user performance metrics CTR , traffic , dwell , bounce etc ....etc . It sounds like your starting to gain some traction but not reliably.

If you want to try to make it stable you need to constantly work on your site and update it regularly with new, fresh content and with popular and trading keywords, and occasionally add more of your main keyword to other pages and parts of the site. This isn't som 100% guarantee that you'll stay ranked as you are now, as it highly depends on many factors, among them algorithms policy changes, but this will increase your chances.

As for another question, the same advice as above, work more on the site and on a specific page that you want to rank higher, but here also pay attention to what your competition is doing so that they don't overcome you at some point.
 
For better keyword ranking, you can add LSI keywords to your content, build some quality links through outreach and guest blogging, add some internal links to boost the topical authority, reduce bounce rates by improving technical SEO, like increasing site speed.
 
Update daily content and make quality backllinks
 
Monitor the bounce rate and focus on churning out more posts

Good quality backlinks and good content would only do the work for keeping rankings stable , plus get some more quality backlinks for an rank increase or check the competitors backlinks if you wanna outrun them !
