This is a short and simple guide for those of you who are looking to filter spam on a Wordpress website without using a plugin. I've been using this feature for about a month with one of my websites and I went from getting hundreds of spam comments each days when I first started using it to only 1 or 2 (sometimes none at all!).

How To Filter Wordpress Spam Without A Plugin In 6 Easy Steps

    1. Log in to your Wordpress dashboard
    2. Go to your settings
    3. Go To "Discussion"
    4. Scroll down until you see "Comment Blacklist"
    5. Enter the words that frequently appear in your comments (make sure they aren't common words like "hello").
    6. Save your changes

If you're wondering what you should use in your comment blacklist, here are some words that would frequently appear in the spam comments that I used to receive:

It will not prevent every spam comment from getting through, but it makes managing spam without a plugin much easier if you do not like having too many plugins on your website.

nice idea, going to try that.
Do you also have it set so that only registered users can post?
And you you have akismet running?

    Hello, davids355!

I have the 'Users must be registered and logged in to comment' unchecked since I do occasionally get a few genuine comments on my sites from users who are not registered, so I leave it open for them.

I also had Akismet running in conjunction with the comment blacklist feature at one point, but I disabled it because I wanted to see how well the comment blacklist would work by itself (which, by the looks of it, it works pretty well) and also because I wanted to reduce my plugin count (I had 21 active plugins at one point in time that were slowing down my website. I managed to get the number down to 13 active plugins recently).

Nicely explained. If you do happen to get a few spam comments through, this makes it a lot easier to just grab and block the remaining IP addresses if necessary, using htaccess.

Thank you! Also, the comment blacklist allows you to block IP addresses, e-mails, and URLs as well!
