You can use blogspot for creating a mini site but I wouldn't create any authority sites on 3th party subdomains.

Not sure if i've said this already but props to the OP! This tut has formed the basic for some of my current projects!
 
Nice guide. the section baout hosting is an overlooked one. I often times have to switch hosts when my sites get popular since i always opt for cheap shared hosting to begin with. Its better to just start with a server from the get go.

Get a $5 VPS where you can host all your small sites.
 
You mentioned using custom nameservers in the OP, so what are the benefits besides the branding?

It creates a more professional look to anyone who's investigating your site. It's also a good way to relatively hide hosting company name. Instead of ns1.hostgator.com you'll have hs1.yourdomain.com so your hosting company name won't be obvious.
