For beginners, long tail keywords are better as their site will rank with medium efforts and after they are getting traffic on their website/blog then they can target high competitive keywords.

Look for something that 1) doesn't have an authortity website on the first page results.
2) doesn't have many sites talking secifically about the topic.
3) top results have thin content (any content that you think you can write better and offer better advice/material).

And you won;t even need links to rank that...
