I'm not an Internet Marketing expert, but from what I know.. the easiest way but pretty hard to do is SEO. You made the traffic that comes from search engine.
 
The cheapest (free) type of SEO is on page optimisation, there are tons of guides here on how to properly optimise your META titles, descriptions, page structure and on page content. Once your on page SEO is sound, then you need to build high quality and diverse backlinks, social signals, quality PBN links. How many links you will need will depend on your niche and keyword difficulty. Also remember to add fresh, new and relevant content to your blog targeting keywords.

Download keyword feast from supa growth, it's free. Then use it to find some nice long tails. Then get expired tumblr hunter, again free. Point 20 tumblrs at each long tail. Put some Decent content on the tumblrs so they index. You'll be ranking in no time my friend :-)

In my opinion..i recommend 2 kind of traffic for fresh blog :

- social media traffic by sharing engaging content
- blog traffic..this can be a strong milestone for you if you can submit powerful content to high traffic relevant site, that would provide you long term traffic .

I think SEO and content distribution on social platforms can bring you traffic. Also, check out social bookmarking sites, if you have really interesting content, it can go viral.. :)
