How to add keywords

Hi,
This might be a newbie question so please bear with me ;-)
I'm researching my website against my competitors on SEMRUSH and I've found that the biggest difference between us is that they have thousands of keywords and I have 89.... Beside that they have thousands of organic entries per month and I have.... well..... about 90.
I know that I need more back-links from high authority websites but how do I add so many more keywords?

I personally gain more keywords by writing more blog posts with the keywords i'm targeting.

How do you define them as keywords? I have about ten blog posts on my site (and tumbler) each with about 1000 words. I also have a lot of different metatags on each product page. How come only 89 are found and defined as keywords?
I think this is kind of a general question. But if I have a blog with about 1000 words, how are the keywords selected from that article?
 
Only one way here - research more keywords and grow your content
 
2018 is all about long form content, it gets better ranking, more shares, more trust and higher conversion rate.
 
Building backlinks only won't help in ranking more keywords, before targeting the keywords post the well informational article about it on your website, then add backlinks to it. It's a routine process to increase your organic traffic and keyword rankings.
 
I too agree... Content is the first thing that Google looks for. So make it to be the best, also do some keyword research to find the best suitbale keyword. Then try buidling good quality backlinks it will provide you good results. All the best!

Did you check how many pages/articles that they have compare to yours?

In line with comments from others, you should research more keywords and make more articles. Be sure to make content that valuable for your users. After that, start thinking about add more backlinks.

I'm doing that but I'm curious how google identify what is a keyword in the blog. For example, the following sentence: "I woke up this morning and logged into my computer to check the weather". what are the keywords here? Weather / check the weather / computer weather???
I'm trying to understand what is categorized as a keyword.

There are many factors google consider in finding the keyword in your content:
Keyword density - Keep it to 3%
Internal linking

Yes, backlinks are important but content is equally important too. If you are very good with writing content you can smartly add the keywords in it, or else you can take help of an expert and they can surely include required keywords in your content. Once you have the keywords smartly included in your content, it will definitely boost the results. Also make sure, never overuse your keywords in your content. This may appear as spamming.
