How should a newbie get started?

I'm extremely interested in getting into the IM business. While I'm eager to get started, I know almost nothing about the methodology or even terminology (up until a few days ago I couldn't tell you what a backlink was). I want to gain some knowledge on the business before I start investing time working, but I don't really know where to begin. Where did you guys learn the ropes, and what do you recommend for someone just getting started? All answers are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
