How should a good review sample copy be?

A lot of you hire writers so please help me! What do you desire in a review copy?

When someone directly asks me "Send me some review copies of your work" I don't know what exactly to send them because I do all sorts of different work. So what is a client basically looking for? Is it:

• A small piece of text (500-ish) about any random general topic?
• A good length in-depth article showing my fullest potential?
• A selection of my former works?
• Something specific?

Please tell me what is desired!

Personally I keep note of a few samples that cover the main types of content that I offer - for example I write mostly technical content and I offer this content with and without detailed research so I have 2-3 articles that I have written without research and 2-3 that I have heavily researched.

That way I can show people exactly what they are going to get for their money, which saves any unhappy customers after the event.

You might have a lot more different types of work that you take on but you just need to get some samples that cover the majority of it - or that showcase the best parts of what you do, or that show the potential customer the type of work that relates to what they are looking for.

A review copy must be good enough so others can see the potential that you have. I think that it needs to be just as good as the work that you would normally give them.
