WordPress is secure, as long as publishers take website security seriously and follow best practices. Best practices include using safe plugins and themes ( don't use nulled themse and plugin, keeping responsible login procedures, using security plugins to monitor your site, and updating regularly.
So without plugins, its security is basically shite?

It's 100% true. Specially, you don't follow a software updating routine like mad.
WP itself without plugins is very solid, but WP ecosystem is an orchard of hacks

the wordpress core is fairly secure if you keep it updated. sometimes there are critical bugs too, but most of the time they get patched fast.
plugins and themes often have vulnerabilities so you need to stay up to date with that.
don't just randomly install tons of plugins and dont use nulled themes and plugins as they might contain backdoors.
additionally you can use security plugins for extra protection.

Yes wordpress is shit and can be hacked with out plugins. Especially security related such as wordfence and unauthorized ip blocking, repeat attacks

WordPress is secure but has a lot potential vulnerabilities because it has a massive code base,
it gets even worse once you start adding themes and plugins.
The most secure websites are static websites since they are practically unhackable (since there is nothing to hack, apart from your hosting server)

Wordpress is exactly like linux. Biggest and most sensitive corporates in the world use it. Because you are in control of everything, you can turn it into the most secure platform in the world, or the weakest one.
If you choose to use mac over linux (shopify over woocommerce) for example, and happy with the limitations, then its your choice.
So, its one of the safest platforms but as a user if you do something dumb, it won't prevent you.
