I'm surprised by the number of people dismissing these links. A contextual link from forbes survives any update and is as bulletproof for your business and SEO as it gets. I wouldn't be surprised if large corporations paid tens of thousands in schmoozing for high authority press.
My guess is that the big corporations hire or have their own PR agency that do exactly what you said, spend thousands on smoozing. Not buying links, but pretty much are.
I've been doing a lot of following of media and journalists over the last few months and you can see some brands just seem to have an in, while us small guys have to do everything we can to try and get on there. It kinda sucks.
It's not so much the link that's valuable, it's only valuable if the article is popular. You can get a link on an article that gets no attention, that link has little value, Frobes, Huff, whatever. Get a link in an article that gets 500 shares and links from another 20 websites, and that link is great.
But what if this guy gets caught, or Google some how finds out. That money is wasted and you possibly get penalized. I've contemplated some big name links, but so far haven't. If I had a big budet I'd think about it, but I think $500+ could probably be spent better else where.
I have a friend that got mentioned in an WSJ article, and it ended up making him $20,000 in the long run.
