I'm going to take a different point of view on this
I used to have a "command centre" - 2 laptops each running an external monitor
Thought it would make me uber-productive.
It didn't. Time suck. I'm way too ADD.
Here's what I've done - and for me personally it's done wonders for my productivity
I focus on automating and getting the screens out of my face.
I cleared out a closet to make room for laptops. I have one piece of (fairly old) hardware each for SENuke, Tweet Attacks, and Scrapebox.
Everything else on the hardware is locked down. No other programs. I even block the sites I normally surf to on the hosts file.
(Yes, I'm aware that I could easily run VM's - I'll probably do that when I do a hardware refresh, but for now this workflow seams to work for me personally.)
80-90% of the stuff I do is on one small laptop. External KB and Mouse.
When I need to do something quick (new senuke run, check to make sure tweet attacks is running ok, etc.), I log in remotely, or just take a quick look.
When I need to do something more involved, I take the hardware over to the desk where I can focus on what I'm doing
Why do it this way?
1) it forces me to automate - set things up, and then let them run. No monitoring and fiddling.
2) it makes me focus on just one thing at a time. No distractions in my face. No toolbars flashing. I never really need to be working on SENuke and Scrapebox at the same time - or any two projects for that matter
3) It makes me think long(er) term - instead of looking at SENuke every 30 minutes, I take 4 hours to set up what I want it to do for the next week, then it's just a matter of logging in every now and then and letting the program do it's job and going down a checklist.
4) It's helping me prepare to outsource parts of my operation - I try to manage it as if each part of the process is a separate job. Easier to split those tasks off when it comes time to outsource them.
