How much do thumbnails really affect views?

Sometimes a video has a solid CTR but still doesn't get much reach. do you spend more time testing thumbnails or focus mainly on the content itself?

I believe that thumbnails are very important for the first click through but good content is what makes the video work if the CTR is already high, then I would concentrate more on content and viewer retention.

Thumbnails will be tested, although I would not that much obsess about them. Provided that CTR is gud and reach was still low my guess is that the problem might lie else where in retention or target match.
 
thumbnails can have a big impact on getting the click but a good CTR alone doesn’t guarantee more reach i’d test thumbnails when CTR is weak but if CTR is already solid i’d focus more on retention viewer satisfaction and the content itself
 
For long form content especially it does make a significant difference, making an eye catching thumbnail is a must & pretty easily doable using basic AI tools.
 
thumbnails play a huge role in getting people to click and check out the video. i recently had an issue with youtube and no thumbnails were showing. I didn't realize how much of an impact thumbnails had until they were all gone, and I was only able to see the titles i clicked on a lot fewer videos that day.
 
I’d check the content first, coz a good ctr wont help much if retention and viewer satisfaction arent strong enough to get more reach.
 
when the thumbnails are missing you realize how much they influence what people choose to click.even with good titles i probably click on fewer videos too.
 
A lot, I see hot girl with big boobs on thumbnail I click, then I see a roblox video.

exactly, after CTR becomes healthy, changing thumbnails will give diminishing returns. that’s when i would pay attention to retention, watch time, and drop-off
 
If CTR is already solid, I’d focus more on retention and the topic itself. A better thumbnail won’t help much if people click but don’t keep watching.
 
I think both thumbnails and content matter. A good thumbnail can attract the initial click, but strong content is what keeps viewers watching and helps the video grow.
 
Honestly bro I’d test thumbnails first If the CTR is already solid then I’d look more at the content and retention to figure out why YouTube isn’t pushing it.
 
When you change the title and thumbnail, the video will receive a new wave of positive feedback.
 
I think a clear thumbnail helps a lot. For example, if a video is about SEO tips but the thumbnail is too confusing, I might just scroll past it. A simple and clear thumbnail can make me stop and check the video.
 
Thumbnails determine whether viewers click on your video, but if i were doing it, i would still focus on the content to ensure the message is conveyed to the audience as effectively as possible.

It affects a video to some degree, but it won't really help to the degree that many people make it out to be.
There are more factors at play here, than just the thumbnail.

a video with a good thumbnail and CTR can still fail, when compared to some random video with a lower CTR and retention, that succeeds.
there's a lot of random luck factors involved too.
 
Thumbnails can make a big difference in getting clicks but clickbait can hurt retention. If the CTR is already strong i would focus more on the content, watch time, and keeping viewers engaged instead of constantly testing new thumbnails.
 
Check impressions too. If impressions are low but CTR is good, only changing the thumbnail may not solve the real problem.
 
Thumbnails are extremely important because they determine whether viewers will click on a video and watch it. I always choose thumbnails that spark curiosity and make viewers want to click, and this approach has been really effective.
