You can check whenever you want, 1 or 2 times a day is fine IMO.

I check my ranking every week after the article is posted or updated

1 or 2 times a week is enough.
Let's say you post or improve an article, it will take google time to position the article somewhere and it will take more than 1-2 hours.
Sometimes, I check every day and even that can be depressing. so I prefer to check about twice a week.

In my opinion, it is not necessary to check this frequently in a day, but you can if you wish.
