How many sites do you need in a PBN?

As many as you need to make a difference. Using PBNs is not exact science. Using backlinks in general is not exact science. There are other tanking factors.

Long story short: keep on adding till you make it.
 
It Depends on the keywords in which you are targeting . if you want your site to rank first in particular keyword make a pbn of all those keywods
 
if you have a one PBN you maintain the optimizing of PBN this is good, if you have 4 PBN you maintained the optimizing this is also good. optimizing is a must because they increase or maintain traffic in your PBN website.

well .. it Depends on keyword competition and on the other hand a lot depends on the power of PBN. wanna know the keywords/niche to give the right a advice ...from my opinion PBN links are not a good long term strategy for sustained traffic. google will eventually shut it down.

Maybe 1 or 100+ nobody knows it’s just a game of guessing
 
its depend on keyword competition and what kind of PBN domain u used....
20RD and 100RD Domain surely have a different power

Like most have said above, it all depends on how strong you want the PBN to be (or how much content you have to post until it starts being effective).

There is no magic number yet to know exactly what the formula to be on the front page of the search engine. But you can do research on your competitors and understand more or less how much they have and you will understand how much more you have left to get.

My recommendation will be to schedule your guest posts (PBN’s) throughout the entire month and reviewing your results over time,
 
batches of 10 as a ballpark just to see what page you land on
 
I dont use PBN anymore, I use links from rankerx, or senuke XCR
PBN is too much cost and too much time to do for 1 single submission

-authority of the domains
-authority of the money sites

Short answer: there's no way to know.
