... in order to be able to put an external link on the sidebar?

I have a subreddit with about 170 members but I'm still unable to put links on the sidebar.

Is there any way around it?

There are no member requirements.
As long as you can create a subreddit, you can post a link on a sidebar...
maybe you're using wrong code for the link?

I tried this, it didn't work.

It looks to me that they might have changed that recently
I literally just tried it on a sub with 19 members and it works. If you're using the new Reddit, create a new sidebar and then add the text I provided.

And I create a link on a new subreddit just yesterday.

Are you adding a link in description? it won't work. You need to add a new text area to the sidebar.

I will be trying it and let you know the result soon.

I must have been doing something wrong. Are you referring to the old Reddit interface or does it also work on the new one? Can't seem to find a guide anywhere, if you know any, pls share the link.

This is for new Reddit, which I assume you're using based on your question:

Click the mod tools button on your community info sidebar widget, select community appearance from the left sidebar, and then sidebar widgets. Add whatever you want.
