How many hours can you code per day?

Coding is a stressful job, so how many hours should we work on a project a day to stay safe and healthy?

I code for like 5-6 hours daily, 3 in the morning and 2-3 afternoon

I'm productive for four hours in a day. If I write code for longer than that then I usually end up having to refactor it the next day.

Most people, including myself, that I've worked with are the most productive within the first 5 hours. After that productivity usually declines quite sharply. However, there are times when you need to code for much longer. I've had to code for 16 hours on several projects. If you are to embark upon a long coding session, make sure you take proper breaks and other health and safety procedures.

Well I've been up for the past 3 days. Not all the time was spent coding, but a majority of it was.
I can normally do 20 hours straight till I need an hour break.

I've got 18-20 hours plenty of times, minus some small breaks to use the washroom, eat, etc.

It gets hard when you start to get tired though. It's almost like being drunk! You can't think straight and you start to make lots of mistakes

What kind of tools do you create? I generally create desktop based web bots. So I don't need to spend much time per day on a project though.

I know times when i coded entire day and even my head is burning out i didn't quit :) ..

I'm proud on myself

i code everytime, i just dont have anything else to do except eating and sleeping :D

You could do it in 2 days by dividing the work, why didn't you do it?

That doesn't look like a healthy lifestyle. Breathe some fresh air sometimes. What tools do you create if you don't mind me asking?

Even though I stay at computer more than 10 hrs a day, I code about 1 hour max. In the past it was different story.

yeah i feel it sometimes but i like aggression towards my work. i do take a 10-20min walk to refresh myself
and its has been alot of time doing it so i have ready made codes for almost everything..
desktop / websites/ mobile applications / linux scriptings / algorithms etc... anything related to computer

I'm codding for relax - long range from the daily stress. Sometime 10 hours sometime 10 minutes. In my case depends from alcohol quality and quantity. For me the codding is like fishing (real offline fishing).
If the codding is your daily job than it is all about stress (excepting the cases when your boss allows drinking, which seems impossible) just like each other brain work.

I work freelance. Some days I don't feel like coding at all; and on some days I can work the entire day (I have pushed 20 hour days a couple of times - it's really not that bad if you take breaks).

So I just work like that. Whenever I 'feel it' and I have no issues and everything runs smooth I just try to push out as much as I can (if a deadline is close then I usually do the crazy 20 hour days), but otherwise I'm usually maxing 12 hours on good days. When I don't move anywhere I usually just take a break for a while or don't code that day at all. Just trying to minimize stress this way. Working good so far.

In the end I push around 200 - 300 hours per month. (But I'm working like crazy. So many projects, so many ideas. There is no stopping)

I work on freelance and personal side projects.

I used to do coding "marathons" where I coded for over 24 hours straight. But after that I chilled for a week :) Realistically it is impossible to work and focus for more than 4-6 hours/day consistently. Regardless of the job.

To me 6-7 hours of productive work including coding is the sweet spot. Over the years, I have been able consistently to work that hours easily. You then have some free hours to go to gym, socialize, etc.

It also depends if the project is "hard" or "easy", when I'm less experienced with the project or task, I have to spend additional effort to learn, solve problems, communicate with the team, etc. While on the other hand, I can spend 10 hrs working on the easy tasks without even blinking ;).

I think it's healthy to do 6-7 per hour max.. otherwise you are burned out within 1-2 weeks which means low productivity + tons of retarded decisions that make you rewrite your code in the future.
Also every time when you get out of your zone, take a break.. like 10 min or so (yes then it takes like 10-20 min to get back to the zone, but it's worth it).

I have done some crazy marathons, but it's not worth it.. you start making stupid mistakes and you later waste your time rewriting stuff.
