How many backlinks are enough for a medium low KD?

Focus on 3–5 high-quality, relevant backlinks and strong content; you don’t need to match 3k low-quality links to outrank them.

For medium-low KD, 5–10 high-quality, relevant backlinks are usually enough if your content is strong and optimized.

You do not need 3000 links,a few high quality, relevant back links can outrank thousands of weaker ones.focus on strategic links, strong content, and solid on page seo for maximum impact.

KD shown on a third-party tool is not 100% Reliable metric to judge the competition. You get a clear picture when you check their backlinks, Content Gap, Overall Social Presence, Age, Website Traffic etc
So if you can think, you can do better in these areas than you can outrank them!
Also, among those 3k backlinks - 90% of them are spam, built by automation or neg SEO.. You should be able to figure out by going through their backlinks then it is highly possible you may find only 30 Quality links, which are the reason they are ranking!
Good Luck

Hello there,
I found a KD 12 with monthly volume 390. Now the top ranking page is having more than 3k backlinks and not sure how and why it has those many. Now if I have to displace it, what the math is? I can't buy 3k for sure. But does high relevant 3-4 from high authority would work? That's around $1k of total expenses in am talking about!

How do you decide how many are enough?
Imo, there’s no fixed number

For low KD, relevance + content fit usually beats raw backlink count — a few strong, topical links can outrank thousands of junk ones if the page intent and on-page are better.

My honest take on your situation

If KD is truly 12 and volume 390, I’d first try:
  • Better content than #1
  • Strong internal linking
  • Maybe 2–4 very relevant editorial links
Only after that would I spend heavier. Dropping $1k upfront without testing is risky but if it's really conviencible after the trial then its worthy.

Backlink count alone doesn’t decide rankings. Those 3k links may be low-quality, sitewide, old, or irrelevant. What matters is link quality, relevance, anchors, and the overall strength of the page.

For KD 12, 3–10 strong, relevant links (topical, real traffic, clean anchors) plus better content and on-page can absolutely beat a page with thousands of weak links.

Backlink count alone doesn’t decide rankings. Many pages have thousands of low-value links. For a KD 12 keyword, a few highly relevant, strong links plus better content and internal linking can be enough. Focus on link quality, intent match, and page strength, not matching their backlink number.

There is not fixed number of backlinks required to rank a keyword.

Most important is your main domain trust. High domain trust sites, get their webpages ranked by Google with less links because Google trusts the domain.

Low domain trust domains, may require some link push to rank for the same keyword.

Since you are using Ahrefs tool , you can check the top 10 ranking webpages, their domain ratings, number backlinks to make a judgement.

Exactly, everyone seems to be focusing on spamming backlinks and nothing else and then act all surprised when nothing changed in terms of ranking. Then you look at their on page SEO and it’s not even cross device compatible. LOL.

I think for a medium‑low KD, 30–70 quality backlinks are enough to rank.

Focus on quality and relevance, not quantity; a few strong links can outrank dozens of weak ones for low KD niches.

There’s no math

For low KD, intent + content fit + a few strong topical links can beat thousands of weak backlinks, don’t need to match their count.

For medium or low difficult keyword difficult(KD) Page, there is no fix backlinks. Usually 10-30 backlinks from relevant website can be enough to start ranking if the content is good and on page -SEO strong. But Quality is more important Quantity. Also, ranking depends on competition, content depth, and topical relevance rather than just link.
