Hello there,
I found a KD 12 with monthly volume 390. Now the top ranking page is having more than 3k backlinks and not sure how and why it has those many. Now if I have to displace it, what the math is? I can't buy 3k for sure. But does high relevant 3-4 from high authority would work? That's around $1k of total expenses in am talking about!

How do you decide how many are enough?

I don't know what a KD 12 is, but I know white hat SEO for sure : these 3k backlinks might be a handicape for this page. In terms of backlinks, the number doesn't help, the quality does. Within these 3k backlinks, how many are destroying your SEO ? Since Google's Core December 2025 Update, old domain names with roten links might not be indexed at all.

Dig through your competitors' backlinks and narrow down to 10-20 best quality links.

Try to replicate those would be a good start and build more if needed.

Links is like money, never enough :D

KD is keyword difficulty. 12 meaning low difficulty to rank.

So you mean to get backlinks from same 10-12 sites or similar authority sites?

I would start on the same sites first then spread to other similar sites until gaining tractions.

Work on getting quality backlink to rank for these KD 12 keyword. Even if you get backlinks from only communities related to your niche that should be enough. But the backlinks should get indexed first.

There is no fixed math for backlinks. For a KD 12 keyword, you do not need to match 3k links. That number is usually inflated by low-quality or sitewide links. What matters more is relevance, referring domains, and how well your content matches search intent. In most cases, a better page with strong on-page SEO and 3 to 5 high-quality, relevant links can easily beat a page with thousands of weak backlinks.

Don’t worry about 3k backlinks in seo quality matters more than numbers.
Most are sitewide links which google counts as just one
Check referring domains instead usually it’s only a few sites.
That’s why a few strong backlinks can beat thousands of weak ones.

For a medium‑low KD, usually 30–70 quality backlinks are enough to rank, depending on content relevance, on-page SEO, and competition.

you don’t need to match 3k backlinks for KD 12 most are usually low value. often 3–10 strong niche-relevant links plus better content/internal linking is enough. I judge “enough” by checking referring domains + link quality + intent match of the top results, then build until the page moves and stabilizes.

You don’t need to match their 3k backlinks. Backlink count isn’t linear, especially at KD 12. In many cases, 3–5 highly relevant, contextual links can beat thousands of weak or legacy links. Focus on referring domains, relevance, and content intent. Strong content + a few authoritative niche links is usually enough to displace pages like that.

There are many factors influencing the ranking. Even if you consider only backlinks, then there are things like referring domains, irrelevant or low authority links, low quality or spam backlinks, etc. that you need to understand. We should see backlinks as a qualitative metric instead of a quantitative one. So, you should try to replicate link juice instead of number of backlinks. Sometimes you can rank even without backlinks if you have a much stronger on-page SEO and topical authority.

Have you analzyed those backlinks, what kind or what quality of they are?

Thanks all for your response! Looks like i need to spend some good amount of money to get the 1st rank here.

There’s no fixed number quality, relevance, and page strength matter more than raw backlink count. A few strong, niche-relevant links combined with better content and on-page optimization can often compete even against pages with thousands of weak links.

For a medium–low KD keyword, 5–20 quality, relevant backlinks are usually enough if content and on-page SEO are solid.

Honestly, there’s no fixed number that works for every site, even for medium-low KD keywords. From what I’ve seen, it’s more about link quality, relevance, and context rather than sheer quantity. A few strong, relevant backlinks can often outperform dozens of low-quality ones.

I usually focus on building links that make sense for the topic and audience first, then let metrics like DR/DA and anchor diversity guide additional placements.

Curious to hear from others do you prefer a smaller number of highly relevant links, or a larger mix to build authority faster?
