4 years is very long time. You should start building pbn links much earlier.

There were something like 5-7 articles all this time, I'm just now getting around to filling it up. Before, I was afraid of google ban for thousands of links to a small site

You don't have to buy thousands links just buy in smaller scale and if it works then only add more.

If you have a new website, you can begin using PBN links after 2 - 3 months slowly. But build high-quality links only.

I would suggest that once you have a few pages indexed in google (2-6 weeks usually) add in some of your own manually created web 2.0s, once these are indexed link back with those, then a couple more weeks start looking at adding small quantities of PBN links, say 5-10 a week.

Within couple of months, start with only brand and naked URL. Keep writing content and fill it with good quality stuff
