How is Google Trends calculated by Google ?

Hello ,

Recently there was downfall in brand name of one of my client where as his competitors graph is rising.
Traffic haven't changed much rather it has increased but still the google trends graph shows it below it and its reverse for competitors.

I just want to understand how does google calculate trends.
Can payed campaigns impact Google trends.

I just want to inderstand Google trends.
