How important is onpage seo ?

That's the safe way to go IMO.

Don't only think of text, think of link structure as well, where you'd like the link juice to flow is one of the most important considerations.

Sites made like a spiderweb where every page links to every other, tags, categories, featured, etc, those usually take more work to rank because you're not distributing link juice right.

Lol.. you would love to work at my job.. i work for an agency that hardly builds links...im serious.. but we make small changes and "fetch" it to see how it will affect rankings etc... also build new pages; don't think you would enjoy that.

On page is important and it is the first thing that needs taken care of before starting to build links.
