How important is link velocity?

Nope. No hacking involved. I'm not into hacking or any other illegal stuff. It is an exploit and it works.

Thank you for letting us know. I for one will NEVER be buying that BST. With a Wordpress exploit, it will eventually get patched up through an update, creating mass chaos for all your clients once it is. Not smart to be selling those links.

Yes, I used to be into black hat security. I know it will be fixed eventually. Nothing is left unfixed. It will just take time. I know your doing 2nd tier, but still, no matter what your doing, it has an effect on the site, and if it didn't well you wouldn't be doing it in the first place.

You have absolutely no idea what i am offering, you know nothing about the details. But you somehow know it is bad because it gets patched. 1st those will be very weak support links and are not even 10% of the power of the service. 2nd they patch new versions but there will be millions of blogs left unpatched as you know since you were in bh security. 3rd even if they patch or upgrade the blog, links remain d0f0llow beause the comments already exist in the DB - there would be a need for a plugin to patch all comments in DB and if the blog is left on AA to be spammed to death we can safely assume the owner won't go and patch or install a plugin or clean it.

The exploit exist and is known of at least since v2.8 (when i learned about it) - still exists in today's latest version. 0day exploits of higher risk come up for WP and its plugins more frequent than i go to take a piss.

Also it is not an exploit in the usual sense that would let you upload a shell or something like that. It just has a filtering bug which allows you to fuk up the input so ends up d0f0llow. Still an exploit but just not the usual kind.

If you don't trust me with your site that's ok. I respect that. However please do not make assumptions about "creating mass chaos for all my clients" when you have in fact absolutely no idea of what i will offer and how i will implement everything.

Also, any segment in the service can be removed by request. You can remove any type of link types you don't want and i won't build them. Simple as that. I think this is an important feature for my future clients and especially for you since you are against these links, wouldn't you say?

Since you were so against my service I'll give you a nice deal - 10% off. You can build a fresh test site (subdomains or free blogs not allowed) and test the service on it. That's what i do when i have doubts (generally) - i first test. Since will work just fine it will become a satellite helping your main site.

I am not trying to argue. Like you, none of my sites have been penalized by any update so far. I had one recently have a plummet for a few days after months of work and huge keywords for conversion with high search volume/high competition, but came back up to my surprise after only a few days. Must have been something niche related that was implemented considering a wide variety of sites in this niche were hit pretty hard, but possibly rolled back. Who knows, it's Google, and Google is quite the surprise.

I am not saying that your service will not be a "good" service, however there is always a possibility of something being patched. Since you did publicize that this exploit does exist, there are those out there who may try to figure this out, and if it ever is released to the public, that will be grounds for a patch. I have a feeling if this is patched they may revert, HOWEVER, I have not the slightest clue as to how it is being done, so I could very well be wrong if it would be able to revert the d0foll0ws. I personally do not buy any BST's so although I do appreciate the offer, I like to do everything the way I have set already.

That all being said, if you are inputting several different methods besides the Wordpress d0foll0ws, which I obviously assume you will, then there shouldn't be much of a problem for your clients. I may have misread before that you will be implementing other types of links aside from the Wordpress d0foll0ws.

Anyways, I do not mean to bash your service at all, in fact you seem very knowledgeable on the subject, so I do believe you will do well with your service. Best of luck to you, and maybe someday I will test it on one of my older less valuable sites after a few months of your service being active. It's worth a shot!

See you on #1

Amazing post mate, Some real gems in there +rep.

There are only a handfull of people on BHW that i think seriously know what they are doing with regards to SEO (Scrityy, Xenix, theDeamon etc etc). You just joined their ranks in my litte list. Time to go read your old posts :p

At this point I can basically simulate naturalness. It is not natural but it looks so.

That right there is SEO in 2012 in a nutshell. In the past it was possible to go through the serps after an update and immediately pick out what was working and then clone it. This isn't really the case any more. Now the best strategy, instead of pouring over the serps and trying to think up shortcuts, is to sit down and think about what a high quality, natural site looks like, both on and off the page, and then feed those signals to Google.

Now days I have a bunch of variations of what I think a natural site would look like, and I build everything differently and build links in a way that mirrors the chaos that is the internet. I barely notice updates these days, until I read that one has happened on forums - some stuff goes up, some stuff goes down, but as long as I keep pumping out the (natural looking) crap, traffic just keeps on building.

Excellent posts in this thread Mad Octopus. :cheer2:

People are still focusing on "SEO Strategies" too much, as Autumn says, the key to a successful SEO project in 2012 is all about how natural it is. Don't try "100 Web 2.0 Links and 50 Wiki Links", just post whatever you like whenever you like, as long as you keep it natural.

Google has a patent dealing with link velocity, and according to Google it DOES matter for SERP.

Whoever claims otherwise should probably revise his SEO handbooks. :-)

Link velocity isn't as straightforward as keeping a steady link velocity either.

Google says a lot of stuff. It even says not to build any links but instead write content that attracts links.

Google has a bunch of patents, it doesn't mean it uses them. You can NEVER know what's working in the backend of a search engine. Even if bing starts using those patents, google will have no way of knowing that. Do you really think google is stupid enough to tell everyone how their search really works by patenting it?

Google like any normal hi-tech company patents every algorithm it creates, and it has nothing to do with 'telling everyone how it works or not telling'. They patent things NOT in order to protect the intellectual property either, but because otherwise they get sued by those who steal/reinvent the algorithms.

Patents cost a lot, especially because Google has to register them outside US as well, and a commercial company will not initiate worldwide patent registration unless they are sure that they have created something worth patenting. Something worth patenting, in 99% of the cases gets implemented this way or another.

So yep, Google patents is as close as you can get to the real workings behind Google.

@lancis If google hadn't patented PageRank algo and a few other algos, Yahoo would be breathing down their neck today. That's how Google set itself apart. They came up with an idea and made sure nobody else will use it by patenting it. Good play from Google.

Even if they patent something and even if they will at some point use it fully or partially in an algo, sometimes implementing an algorithm is not cost effective. Google has the power to develop NLP-based algorithms for better results but that would not be cost effective for them. Same care with lots of other algos from those for better results to those for better anti-spam.

Link velocity isn't nearly as important as link type. If your links are consistently legitimate looking (algorithmically) and built by hand, I can't imagine that you'd go too fast to raise any Google flags. These links are too hard to come by for you to build them "too fast."

Link velocity is often incompletely (or incorrectly) described simply as the speed at which you add incoming links to your website. In reality the "simple" description of link velocity is accurate, but does not take the whole picture into account.
You know that the single most important factor in ranking your website high in the search engines is backlinks, and that a high link velocity will get you where you need to be faster.

One thing that I don't see anyone else mentioning is that link velocity could be an indicator of if a topic (keyword) is passing news or a topic of evergreen interest. Like Michael Jackson's death, there were probably a lot of links built when he died, but now it's not as interesting.

So if a lot of links are built then it stops, that may indicate that it was passing news, and not of interest anymore.

Anyone want to shed some light on the best ways to make link building appear as natural as possible in Google's eyes (since Google says SEO is just on-page and there should be NO off-page at all that you do on your own)?

Link velocity is not the single factors of SEO, now would you explain about your keyword diversity as well? I've seen a lot of threads on BHW revealing about keyword diversity after penguin update, though I've been on it before Panda updates.

See you on #1

Hey madoctopus, you really make me (and may be other members as well) to think out of the box. Thanks for shedding some light on 'seo facts' :D

I don't have a long drawn out answer or even any proof for that matter like some of the posters on this thread, but I can only speak from my experience and my intuition so take it for what it is agree or disagree.

I believe link velocity is a factor. If a site receives 10 visits a day and gets 1,000 backlinks indexed all at once there's no way in heck that's not going to raise some kind of red flag.

I think the keyword itself also matters, because Google I'm sure understands that certain niches would have different backlink profiles. I believe the algorithm can account for this on some level. A web site ranking for "Christmas gifts" will naturally have a major increase in link velocity around the holidays. However, a web site about "office staplers" would look very dodgy going from 10 backlinks a day to 10,000 over night.

I tend to build links very slowly to my money site. I will schedule my links to be built over a period of time usually 20-30 a day. Sometimes for a month or so a time. I don't maintain a constant link velocity, but I sure as hell never blast thousands of links to my money site all at once regardless of quality. However, I think when it comes to quality links like guest blog posts you have much much more leeway when it comes to building tons of links all at once.

One more? Ok, be it! Most epic fail ever in the history of the internet:

You build free blogs (e.g. buypinkshit.wordpress.com) with one single post and link them to your site. Now really, I could implement an algorithm to detect that footprint on a damn pocket calculator. What the fk do you think the chances are for a normal site to have links from 1-page sites? Wait, wait... what are the chances to get links from MANY 1-page sites (because you always build many free blogs)? Wait... what about many 1-page sites, all on subdomains... Wait.... hahah like this? What about many 1-page sites on subdomains, on known free blog platforms, all on the same 30 domains that SENuke and the other tools support. Now seriously, you can't find a bigger footprint than that. That is the fattest footprint ever. In statistics there's something called "confidence". That means how confident you can be that the statistical measure is correct. Now, if Google finds that a link is statistically speaking spam, but it has a very low confidence value, it is unlikely to do something against it. If however you have the situation explained above, both the statistical chance and confidence are high. Hence, you're panda raped (without lubricant).

Excellent point! Thanks and rep given. I could never understand how one page "sites" on 2.0 properties with one link to one site could not be a footprint. Been doing things quite a bit differently myself :). But.. it IS work!

Not very important at all. I've successfully ranked sites, by creating thousands of scrapebox spam comments in one day, and not creating a single link again.

This is not how Google defines link velocity, judging by the patent its the number of links divided by the time the site has been up. So once you stop building links, velocity decreases "automatically" as time passes by. At some point it will be below this of your competitors.
