As the topic says, is content important?
I'm not sure if it is important, from the visitors perspective.

But does Google rank you higher if you get a lot of content, or continue to add content slow but steady?

Unique content, drip fed to a blog or website, eventually gets the nod from Google
 
Theres a reason why they say "Content is King" ;)
 
Google does not like duplicate content (within your site) and does not value thin content (spun and short articles).
 
I've gotta go with what Quadratic said. Google does hate duplicate content and it will definitely effect the SEO in your site. That's been my experience atleast.
 
You want unique content, pictures, videos, and constant updates. It will help a lot. Look at a forum post here called "what todays SEO is" or something like that. It will help you out a lot.
 
Content is about 80% of how i rank for keywords. (GREAT, USEFUL Content!)
 
backlinks are more important i'd say.

for example i had a site that was just a simple splash image with no content at all and i ranked it #1 for it's keyword that returns 1,000,000 results.
 
It used to be that on-page & off-page SEO strategies needed equal attention. Although both still do, I believe on-page will hold significantly more value as time rolls on.

The verdict? Really good content prevails....
 
If your content is so good that it gets you free backlinks because people link to it voluntarily, then content is king.

Otherwise, content takes a firm back seat to your own backlinking efforts.

High quality, good anchor text back links still trump all!

I second this. I have a website with only one page that has very little content, VERY LITTLE, but ranks #1 on Google for a keyword that returns 5,000,000 results.

Why? Because I utilize backlinks and keyword density for this website.

Great content will see your visitors return. Great content is hard to produce usually. But, In my opinion it is easier to produce greater content than it is to get new visitors.

I always focus on creating great content for two reasons:

1. Getting return visitors
2. Getting backlinks from webmasters or getting facebookers/tweeters (who thought your content was really good) to post your links and get you traffic.


I do not publish any articles that are less than 800 words. I get the feeling that Google doesnt like articles that are less than this and of course that aren't unique.
 
Content is extremly important, you should try to post content to your web site on a daily basis. Post content through your blog or by adding new products to your web site. Google likes to see a web site that is being cotninually updated. Also, more pages with content = more exposure in SERPS.
 
When people say to "drip feed" your website it's content, take note, because it's very important to update regularly at first. I'd actually say it's better to add just a bit every now and then, rather than add a whole bunch at a time, and then give extra long lapses between when you update again.

Realize that not all websites are "drip fed" content anymore, like EzineArticles and YouTube. They've become large enough that Google understands they're expanding, that they have so much user created content that to penalize them for not drip feeding their websites content at a slower rate would be absurd.

So yes, good, unique, quality content is excellent for all websites, especially new ones just starting out.

i have a 2 page website, micro niche, 100% copy/paste content (even the youtube video), never updated but a lot of backlinks (some of them not even niche related) and it's #1 in google and making 3-5 Euros/day from Adsense.

It's all about backlinks and on-page SEO. For me at least

but you need to do right keyword research before making the content.
